New USO Brings Pickleball, Pancakes and a Morale Boost to Troops Fighting al-Shabab

A new USO space is giving American service members a welcome dose of normalcy at Cooperative Security Location Kismayo in southern Somalia. Bingo, protein pancakes, pickleball and video games now offer troops a place to recharge while serving on a counterterrorism mission against al-Shabab.

The United Service Organizations space opened Aug. 22, 2026, with deployed personnel gathering for recreation and activities away from their regular duties. The following day, service members cooked pancakes inside the newly opened location.

The remote outpost presents an environment where even a short break can carry real value. Army Sgt. Elizabeth Thompson, a vehicle mechanic deployed to Kismayo, described the center as a place where troops can relax and strengthen their connections.

“Being away from home can be stressful, so the USO gives us somewhere to take our minds off work for a little while, hang out, play games and build a stronger sense of community,” Thompson said in a statement Thursday.

The lighter atmosphere arrived alongside serious military training at the same installation. Just days before the USO grand opening, troops from the East African Response Force flew into Kismayo for an exercise centered on reinforcing the location during a crisis.

The exercise involved troops responsible for base defenses, mortar operations, medical care and the coordination of air support. Those capabilities were brought together around the possibility that the installation could face an attack and require rapid reinforcement.

“This exercise demonstrated our ability to quickly reinforce a position that is possibly getting overrun,” Army 1st Lt. Ethan White, an East African Response Force platoon leader, said in a statement at the time.

The American military mission in Somalia operates largely outside public view. U.S. troops serving in the country have come under fire over the years, while the Kismayo location supports the broader American counterterrorism effort against al-Shabab.

In recent months, U.S. Africa Command has increased airstrikes against the Islamic militant organization. Al-Shabab has sought for decades to topple the Somali government backed by the United States, and the group has frequently been targeted near Kismayo.

The number of American troops stationed at the Kismayo site remains unclear. AFRICOM generally does not release such figures because of security concerns, leaving much of the installation’s manpower outside the public picture.

Even so, military announcements about airstrikes, facilities and infrastructure projects are providing more public information about AFRICOM’s evolving approach in Somalia. The new USO center is one of the projects that has placed another small spotlight on the American presence at the remote outpost.

When AFRICOM was established in 2007, officials at its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, rarely discussed a U.S. military role in Somalia publicly. The command’s early public messaging instead emphasized partnerships, training programs and humanitarian work.

That public posture has changed. AFRICOM now routinely announces airstrikes against al-Shabab and Islamic State fighters in Somalia while also releasing updates about American troops and facilities, including the new center at Kismayo.

Army engineers deployed to Kismayo during the past year to build the USO facility, according to military officials. Their work produced a dedicated recreation space with televisions, gaming consoles, a library, board games, snacks and drinks for deployed personnel.

Opening week packed the schedule with pickleball and cornhole tournaments, bingo and a protein pancake breakfast. The mix of food, games and competition gave troops several ways to step away briefly from the demands of the mission.

“Even having a small break from the everyday routine can help alleviate stress and make being away from home a little easier,” Thompson said. At Kismayo, that break now comes with pancakes, gaming consoles and a place for troops to spend time together.
