Nicole Kidman’s unforgettable performance as Satine in the 2001 film Moulin Rouge! came with an enormous physical toll that few fans ever realized.

As the movie celebrates its twenty fifth anniversary, director Baz Luhrmann and his team have reflected on the punishing toll the production took on its leading lady.

Luhrmann revealed in an interview with The Guardian that Kidman endured so many injuries during filming that the crew eventually lost count. Despite the challenges, he said he knew she was destined for the part from the start.

According to Luhrmann, he first saw Kidman on Broadway and immediately believed she was perfect for the role, later sending her a note that read, “She sings, she dances, she dies.”

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

Once production began, he said she committed to every detail, mastering her vocals and choreography with fierce determination.

The very first scene she filmed turned out to be one of the most dangerous.

Kidman’s iconic swing entrance required her to be suspended from a harness, and she insisted that the moment look authentic, telling Luhrmann, “You need to believe that it’s me.” The demand for realism took a painful turn when she cracked a rib during the take.

Catherine Martin, the film’s associate producer and production designer, said that the accident was only the beginning. The corset used for Satine’s elaborate costumes compounded the injury. “When we were lacing her in tightly, we broke her rib again,” she recalled.

Even after suffering two fractured ribs, Kidman refused to slow down. Luhrmann explained that the production faced another complication when she slipped on a staircase and seriously injured her ankle.

The setback forced her to complete scenes from a wheelchair and rely on crutches between takes.

Luhrmann praised her for her resilience, saying, “It wasn’t easy but she is the definition of a trouper.” Her persistence helped keep the production moving despite constant physical obstacles.

The hazards did not end there. One of the movie’s most ambitious sequences featured Kidman and Ewan McGregor singing atop a sixty foot elephant. Both actors performed while suspended in harnesses, hovering high above the set. Luhrmann commended them for “fearlessly running around out there with this stunt.”

Kidman had previously spoken about her injuries during an interview with Entertainment Tonight while filming. She admitted that before Moulin Rouge!, she had never experienced a broken bone. “I’d never broken a bone, so it was sort of a bit of a shock,” she said.

Months of dancing rehearsals and stunt sequences caused a repetitive stress injury that fractured her rib without her initially realizing it. She recalled continuing to perform through the pain, saying, “I kept dancing… I thought I’d pulled a muscle.”

She later joked about the experience, remarking, “I’m doing things in a corset that no woman would ever have done in the 1890s.”

Her humor underscored the intensity of the experience and her commitment to the role.

By the time filming wrapped, Kidman had endured two cracked ribs, a severely injured ankle, time in a wheelchair, and weeks on crutches.

Despite it all, her dedication helped create one of the most visually striking and emotionally charged performances of her career.

The demanding physical effort behind her portrayal of Satine has since become legendary.

The reflections from Luhrmann, Martin, and Kidman herself reveal just how far she was willing to push for authenticity and artistry on screen.

Her perseverance through pain turned Moulin Rouge! into not only a cinematic landmark but also a testament to her enduring strength.

Twenty five years later, her performance remains as dazzling as ever, proof that even the most glamorous roles can come with a hidden cost.
