Nine people were injured in a shooting early Sunday morning near the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, as large crowds gathered to celebrate the annual “Little 500” cycling race.

According to authorities, gunfire broke out shortly after midnight on Kirkwood Avenue, a popular area lined with bars and restaurants located just one block from campus.

The incident occurred in the 400 block of East Kirkwood, where police said they encountered “multiple wounded individuals” upon arrival.

Emergency responders transported victims to local hospitals, with six taken by ambulance, according to reports.

As of early Sunday morning, officials had not released details about the conditions of those injured or the extent of their wounds.

Witnesses told investigators that the shooting followed a physical altercation between two women in the crowded area.

One witness described the sequence of events leading up to the gunfire.

“Two women fighting… I didn’t think too much of it,” the witness said.

“I figured the police would get to it. But then I saw a girl reach toward her pants leg and start firing. By then, I was already running the other way.”

Law enforcement officials have not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting. Police are asking anyone with information or video footage of the incident to come forward as the investigation continues.

University officials said that, based on information available at this time, no Indiana University students are believed to have been involved in the violence.

The university issued a statement addressing the incident and its impact on the community.

“Last night marred what should have been a celebratory weekend for the IU and Bloomington communities,” said university spokesman Mark Bode.

He added, “While no IU students are believed to be involved, we condemn the violence in the strongest terms and thank the Bloomington Police Department, IUPD, State Police, and other law enforcement agencies who responded to the events off campus.”

Bode also expressed concern for those affected. “Our thoughts are with the victims of this tragic incident,” he said.

The Little 500 is considered the largest collegiate cycling race in the United States and typically draws large crowds to Bloomington each year.

Kirkwood Avenue, located near the Indiana University campus, serves as a central gathering place during the event, often hosting late-night activity tied to the weekend’s celebrations.

Authorities said they plan to provide additional information during a scheduled briefing later Sunday afternoon as investigators continue to gather evidence and review witness accounts.

The shooting in Bloomington comes one week after another incident near a university campus in the Midwest.

In that case, five people were injured, including three students, during a shooting near the University of Iowa.

Law enforcement officials in Bloomington have not indicated whether the two incidents are connected.

The investigation into the Indiana University-area shooting remains ongoing as police work to identify those responsible and determine the circumstances that led to the violence.
