Not Again! Lab-Originated Plague Outbreak in Siberia

Whenever I watch a movie where people wear suits to enter a biohazard facility, my first thought is, “Are you CRAZY?!”

The answer is obviously yes, yes, they are.

While everybody is fretting about whether expensive computer programs are planning to kill us all, real people are messing around with dangerous bugs that really could kill quite a few of us. Ask Dr. Fauci about that. He’ll trot out the Fifth Amendment, of course, but you get the idea.

Just kidding. Sort of.

Well, it appears to have happened again, this time in Russia, and I am just waiting to find out that Western governments have somehow been funding research on plague bacteria, because one appears to have escaped a biohazard lab.

There are several forms of the plague, and nobody has said exactly which one was being studied. But it appears to be a form of pneumonic plague, which is transmissible through airborne droplets.

A suspected plague outbreak has erupted in Russia — killing a young lab worker, forcing nearly 200 people into isolation and triggering accusations that Vladimir Putin’s regime is trying to keep the infection’s possible spread under wraps.

The alarm was raised in Siberia after a worker at an anti-plague laboratory died of the disease, which killed tens of millions in the medieval Black Death, according to a report from The Moscow Times.

Anna Popova, who heads Russia’s public-health watchdog, then rushed 2,600 miles from Moscow to the Irkutsk region as authorities quarantined a hospital and placed scores of people who had come into contact with the victim under medical observation.

There’s no evidence the plague is spreading rapidly, and the Russian government seems to be acting aggressively to contain the incident. So far, we know of only one confirmed case, although we are relying on the Russian government for information, which isn’t exactly comforting.

🚨☣️More details on the Oct 1st pneumonic plague outbreak in Siberia, after a lab accident at a BSL-3 lab.

“FSB units accompanying ambulances transporting people who had been in contact with [lab tech] Shipilova for medical examination,” as per local news. This is significant. FSB is Russia’s domestic security / counterintelligence service, tasked w/implementing the national security of Russia.” (Its predecessor was the KGB). This suggests quarantine was not voluntary.

It also means Russian authorities are treating the lab accident and plague outbreak as a national security issue, involving a lot more than routine public health.

The plague is still studied because it is endemic to certain regions, including Russia, so it’s important to track where it is emerging as a problem and whether drug-resistant varieties are developing. At first I thought this might be a bioweapons research incident, but likely not.

“The situation in Shelekhov, Irkutsk region, where a plague quarantine has been declared, resembles the Wuhan case,” the Russian political insider channel Nezygar warned.

COVID-19 emerged in Wuhan, China, before spreading worldwide and killing more than 7 million people, according to global health estimates.

So far, however, officials say none of the identified contacts has shown symptoms, and their test results have come back negative.

She reportedly told medical staff that she had accidentally broken a test tube containing live bacteria while collecting samples for testing, according to news outlet Lyudi Baikala, or People of Baikal.

Before we get all our panties in a bunch, the plague, in all its forms, is bacterial in origin and, if caught early enough, treatable. The key is “early enough,” since some varieties can kill quickly, as happened here.

Also worth noting is that sources differ in detail beyond the researcher’s death. The Russian government(s) has been closed-mouthed, but it’s clear they are taking the incident seriously, as one would hope. But even the origin of the infection is in dispute.

Plague is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis and takes three main forms. Bubonic plague — the Black Death of history — spreads through flea bites and does not pass directly between people. Septicemic plague infects the bloodstream. Pneumonic plague infects the lungs, and it is the outlier: it can spread from person to person through respiratory droplets, and untreated it is almost always fatal, sometimes within 24 to 72 hours of symptom onset.

That distinction is the entire story here. Russian media reports have described Shipilova’s infection as pneumonic plague, but regional officials have not publicly confirmed the exact form. If the pneumonic form is confirmed, the roughly 200 people under observation represent a genuine containment perimeter around a transmissible, fast-killing pathogen. If she died of bubonic or septicemic plague, the human-to-human risk to those contacts is minimal and the episode is principally a laboratory-safety failure rather than an outbreak threat.

Analysis: The two-day arc from hospitalization to death is consistent with fulminant pneumonic plague — which is precisely why Moscow reacted as if it were. Popova does not fly 2,600 miles for a routine case. But speed of death alone does not confirm the form; severe pneumonia has many causes, and officials’ early vagueness (“particularly dangerous infection”) suggests they were waiting on laboratory confirmation before naming the disease. The honest position, and the one the evidence supports, is that pneumonic plague is suspected but unconfirmed.

Plague is still found in a number of wild reservoirs, and people still occasionally die from it even outside labs. One need not concoct a conspiracy theory about how this particular bacterium was created.

It’s hard to figure out what exactly is going on, since all governments get twitchy about subjects like this, and authoritarian governments like China and Russia quadruply so.

But based on the current evidence, there’s no need to panic, and there’s a real need to find out why labs keep letting bugs out.
