The New York Police Department is experiencing a historic surge in officer retirements, with police union officials warning that the trend could intensify further if Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani becomes the city’s next mayor.

According to data provided to the New York Post by the Police Benevolent Association (PBA), 1,555 NYPD officers have filed for retirement so far this year — a 48% increase over the 1,049 retirements during the same period in 2024, and a 65% increase from 2014, when only 941 officers left the force.

The figures represent one of the sharpest early-year exoduses in department history, according to union leaders.

The PBA attributes the alarming departure rate in part to growing fears over Mamdani’s political rise and his public statements about law enforcement.

We can’t afford to go backwards on the #NYPDStaffingCrisis. A mayor who demonizes police officers will only drive more away.

Mamdani, a state assemblyman from Queens and a self-identified Democratic Socialist, has called the NYPD “wicked and corrupt” in posts on X and has previously advocated for dismantling the department altogether.

All this misery. All for money.

In the last budget, the City Council tried to make the NYPD reduce its overtime budget by half. They simply refused.

There is no negotiating with an institution this wicked & corrupt.

PBA President Patrick Hendry issued a warning about the direction the city could be heading if Mamdani continues to gain momentum.

“We cannot afford to have a mayor who ignores the staffing crisis or pushes policies that take the NYPD backward,” Hendry told the Post.

Although the PBA has not yet made an official endorsement in the mayoral race, internal concerns over Mamdani’s long history of anti-police rhetoric are growing.

Officers across the department have expressed unease about the possibility of Mamdani occupying City Hall, especially as the department continues to deal with staffing shortages and rising retirements.

One officer, a 22-year veteran of the force, told the Post he plans to retire earlier than expected, citing Mamdani’s victory in the Democratic primary as the decisive factor in his decision.

“Him winning the primary definitely made me 100% sure that this is the right decision,” said the officer, who requested anonymity because he is not authorized to speak publicly.

The officer added that Mamdani’s views on law enforcement have made it increasingly difficult to remain in uniform.

“It’s hard to continue serving a city where the potential next mayor sees us as the enemy,” he said.

Mamdani’s campaign has drawn national attention for its progressive platform, which includes policies aimed at significantly reducing the role of police in public safety and redirecting funding toward social services.

While his supporters have praised his focus on equity and reform, critics, including many in law enforcement, argue that his policies would undermine public safety and further demoralize an already strained police force.

Union officials say the current pace of retirements is unsustainable and could threaten the department’s ability to adequately protect the city if left unaddressed.

The department has also struggled to recruit new officers in recent years, compounding the impact of accelerated retirements.

In the absence of immediate solutions, police leaders fear that the number of departing officers could surpass previous records by the end of the year, leaving the city with critical staffing gaps.

As the mayoral race continues to unfold, union officials and officers are closely watching the political developments, warning that the stakes for law enforcement — and public safety — are higher than ever.
