Former President Barack Obama said the motive behind a shooting outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner remains unclear as investigators continue reviewing evidence, including writings attributed to the suspect that outlined plans to target President Donald Trump and members of his administration.

Obama addressed the incident in a statement posted to X, where he emphasized that authorities have not confirmed what led to the attack.

He also condemned political violence and recognized the response of federal law enforcement officers.

“Although we don’t yet have the details about the motives behind last night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner, it’s incumbent upon all us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy,” Obama wrote on X.

“I’m grateful to them – and thankful that the agent who was shot is going to be okay,” he added.

Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Allen, a 31-year-old California man who allegedly opened fire at the Washington Hilton, where the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner was being held. The event was attended by President Donald Trump and senior administration officials.

Federal law enforcement officials told Fox News Digital that after Allen’s arrest, he indicated that he intended to target officials connected to the Trump administration.

According to officials, Allen also prepared a manifesto that outlined his intent and posted material on social media that included anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric.

Investigators have been examining the suspect’s writings, which identified administration officials as potential targets and expressed grievances tied to the Trump administration.

Law enforcement sources indicated that these materials are part of an ongoing effort to determine what may have driven the attack.

The incident also became a point of discussion during an interview with President Trump that aired Sunday evening on “60 Minutes.”

During the exchange, host Norah O’Donnell referenced passages from the alleged manifesto and asked the president for his response.

O’Donnell read excerpts that described administration officials as “targets” and included accusations directed at Trump before asking him to react to the claims.

“I was waiting for you to read that because I knew you would…you’re horrible people,” Trump told O’Donnell.

“You read that crap from some sick person? I got associated with all stuff that has nothing to do with me,” he continued, adding he was exonerated.

The president also addressed O’Donnell directly during the interview.

“I’m not any of those things,” he said.

“You should be ashamed of yourself reading that. You shouldn’t be reading that on ‘60 Minutes.’ You’re a disgrace, but, go ahead, let’s finish the interview.”

The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to review evidence connected to the shooting.
