Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and state health officials are facing serious questions after promoting claims about two deaths linked to measles in Lancaster County.

Local authorities responsible for investigating deaths say they have no record showing that anyone in the county died from the disease.

Shapiro appeared Tuesday with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health for a high profile press conference.

The problem is that Lancaster County officials cannot verify the central claim.

County Commissioner Josh Parsons contacted the officials who actually investigate and document deaths, including Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni and senior members of the coroner’s staff.

Their reported answer was straightforward.

The office has recorded zero deaths caused by measles, while one person who tested positive for measles apparently died from another medical condition, and officials have no information identifying a second supposed victim.

Diamantoni told local media that “no measles deaths were handled by our office,” even as his office investigated the death of an infant who tested positive for the virus.

That infant reportedly died from a ruptured spleen, not from measles itself.

State officials have not publicly clarified whether the infant was included among the two deaths announced by Shapiro.

They also have not provided demographic information or other basic details that could support their claims without revealing patient identities.

Kennedy said federal officials have also attempted to obtain answers from Pennsylvania.

According to Kennedy, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sought information from the state, but Pennsylvania officials refused to cooperate, leaving federal health authorities unable to verify what Shapiro presented publicly.

Kennedy also accused Shapiro of calling his concerns “conspiracy theories” after the health secretary discussed religious objections involving fetal cell substrate in vaccine manufacturing.

Kennedy said Shapiro privately acknowledged that Pennsylvania’s major vaccination decline occurred during the Biden years.

Kennedy continues to recommend measles vaccination, but he also says public health agencies must rebuild credibility rather than bully skeptical families.

That credibility is hardly strengthened when a governor stages a dramatic press conference and then refuses to provide local officials with the facts needed to verify his announcement.

Parsons said he contacted Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health and Shapiro’s office but received no response.

The Lancaster County Department of Public Safety also lacked additional information, while another county commissioner who attended the press conference reportedly could not provide answers.

Pennsylvania law requires deaths from communicable diseases to be reported to the appropriate coroner.

Parsons acknowledged there could be an unusual situation involving a Lancaster County resident who died elsewhere, but said state officials would still have a responsibility to explain that scenario.

The law also permits officials to release demographic details that do not identify a patient.

In other words, privacy rules do not justify complete silence when state leaders have already launched a national news cycle around two alleged deaths.
