According to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred Friday afternoon in the town of Yountville, located about an hour north of San Francisco.

A witness reported seeing a brown convertible collide with an unoccupied vehicle and then continue north without stopping.

Deputies soon found the damaged convertible abandoned near the roadway.

The driver was identified as Paul Pelosi.

Investigators said Pelosi admitted that he realized he had hit something but claimed that he did not know what it was.

Authorities say alcohol was not a factor this time.

“The investigation also determined that no alcohol was detected upon testing, therefore Driving Under the Influence was ruled out,” the sheriff’s office stated.

Pelosi’s preliminary alcohol test came back with a zero result.

Deputies concluded that Pelosi was at fault in the collision.

He was not arrested at the scene, which the sheriff’s office described as standard procedure for a misdemeanor property-damage crash.

Prosecutors in the Napa County District Attorney’s Office will now decide whether to move forward with formal charges.

The sheriff’s office also said it will submit a driver re-evaluation referral to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, a process commonly used when elderly drivers are involved in accidents.

At 86, Pelosi’s driving record is attracting renewed scrutiny.

A spokesperson for the Pelosi family said Paul Pelosi “has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage.”
