Poking the Eagle: IRGC Says It’s ‘Targeting’ US Bases Tonight

I gave up weeks ago trying to figure any of this out. I leave that to the finer minds on this site to pore over the different strategies, statements, posturing, and wizen out the thinking behind chess moves.

Me?

I just want the Iranian regime gone. I realize why we couldn’t state that as an aim at the beginning of this action against them, and that was fine with me. Any strike against the mullahs and crippling of their ability to inflict casualties on Americans at large, and, increasingly, their citizens at home, was fine with me.

Every bomb dropped, every missile that hit, every bullet that hit was one less chance for their deadly, malevolent mischief, and one more blow that should have been struck forty-seven years ago and never had been.

Since we entered the ‘negotiation’ phase, knowing who’s on the other side of the table, I have been waiting for the Iranians’ overconfidence – born from jerking Americans around for nearly five decades – to trip them up. For them to smugly pull a ‘one-step-over-the-line, unforgivable strike or act of bravado that gets them smoked back to stone and ash.

Trump is capable of it, but what would trigger it?

What combination of Iranian smack talk or direct action so heinous would be the flashpoint for the regime finally reaping the annihilation they have so richly deserved for so long?

Secretary of State Marco Rubio did his own bombing run of Democratic senators attempting the ‘Iran is stronger’ propaganda line today in a Senate hearing.

THEIR ECONOMY IS LOSING HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS A DAY

Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismantling Senator Cory Booker’s framing that Iran is somehow stronger under the current blockade:

“𝘕𝘰 𝘰𝘯𝘦’𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 — 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘢 𝘥𝘢𝘺. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺 — 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺 — 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 6-9 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘴 𝘢𝘨𝘰.”

On the actual operational picture Rubio described. 𝐍𝐨 𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐲. 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞-𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭. 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐲. That is not a regime in a strong negotiating position — that is a regime running out of bandwidth.

On the Booker framing every Democratic senator has tried this month. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 “𝐈𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫” 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐡𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬. Rubio just called the assumption itself wrong on the floor of a hearing.

𝐈𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐉𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐲 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐚.

Rubio is the guy.

Say what you want, but Rubio has consistently demonstrated a stronger understanding of the specifics of Iran policy (esp. sanctions) than anyone else in the admin.

…When asked re: sanctions relief, he says that any relief offered to Iran will be conditional on Iran taking verifiable steps on its nuclear program, but he also stresses that there are “international, Congressional, and executive sanctions,” and the admin has the power over some but not all.

Worth keeping in mind when thinking about this issue, and the potential for any deal that goes beyond the current one-page MOU.

Iran will want sanctions relief, and the US govt may not be in a position to provide it to an extent Iran finds acceptable–not immediately, and possibly never.

And he eviscerated a Democratic senator today who accused him of ‘being at a party’ while negotiators were in Pakistan.

“I know your staff wrote up this cute statement for your TikTok video, but it’s not true.”

That’s how it’s done.

The posturing in the Strait of Hormuz will get Iran nowhere.

But I do think performative crap like this could provoke a rise they might wish afterward that they’d toned down the taunting.

Hard to know what constitutes a ‘violation’ and, just as importantly, what those Gulf allies are willing to absorb not to have the US come in with guns blazing.

I’m sure that this “doesn’t violate the ceasefire”, as the previous times “didn’t violate the ceasefire”. Because nothing means anything anymore.

CENTCOM has issued a statement that they initiated ‘defensive strikes’ after the Iranians attacked with drones and ballistic missiles.

U.S. forces successfully defeated multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and drones, and conducted self-defense strikes on Qeshm Island in response to attempted attacks by Iran across the Middle East, June 2.

Iran launched several ballistic missiles toward regional neighbors; however, all failed to hit their intended targets. Two Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait fell short or broke apart enroute, and three missiles launched at Bahrain were immediately intercepted by U.S. and Bahrain air defense forces.

Moments earlier, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces shot down three one-way attack drones launched by Iran toward civilian mariners that were rightfully transiting regional waters. American forces also conducted self-defense strikes on an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island.

No U.S. personnel were harmed. CENTCOM forces remain vigilant and ready to defend against unwarranted Iranian aggression during the ongoing ceasefire.

I sure as hell hope so.

But that’s just me.

Reports also indicate that Iran has also launched strikes against northern Iraq, specifically Erbil. If true, Iran has now launched strikes against Iraq, Bahrain, and Kuwait, in what would be a notable escalation on Iran’s part.

Poke, poke, poke.
