Prince’s Ex Jill Jones Speaks Out on Painful Domestic Abuse Past, Forgiveness

Jill Jones, who was romantically involved with Prince and worked closely with him throughout the 1980s, has opened up about what she describes as a deeply complicated relationship with the late musician.

In her recent interview, Jill painted a portrait of both love and turmoil, recalling moments of tenderness that were overshadowed by what she alleged was violence behind closed doors.

She told the Daily Mirror that Prince “was lovable and adorable” before adding that he “could be hateful too,” words that encapsulated the contradictions she said defined their time together.

According to Jill, a confrontation in 1984 took a violent turn, marking what she described as the lowest point of their relationship.

She said she had considered pressing charges but was discouraged by people close to the singer, who warned it could severely harm his rising career at a crucial moment.

Jill recalled that after the incident, Prince tried to apologize in his own way, sending “a ton of toys,” along with “balloons, toys and candy” following a surgery she had undergone.

“It was really hard for us to not be around each other,” she said, reflecting on the bond that kept them intertwined despite the pain.

“He always thought I would be there. He would always say, ‘I’m always gonna know you’,” she added, describing the depth of their emotional connection.

For years, Jill said she hesitated to speak publicly about what had happened, explaining that part of her held onto hope for an apology that never came.

She spoke candidly about the complexities of abuse within intimate relationships, saying, “You wait for an apology sometimes from someone that you love, you think they’re going to, and they want to move on and not talk about it, and you allow it.”

Jill also expressed that the social attitudes of the time played a role, remarking, “It was an era of time where men did knock around their wives. It was just something that happened.”

She said it took years to fully process and come to terms with her experiences, ultimately deciding she had to forgive him. “He’s just a product of a time, although I’m not trying to make excuses,” she explained.

Jill noted that part of her decision to finally speak more openly was influenced by later events within the music world, particularly mentioning the 2009 assault case involving Chris Brown and Rihanna.

She said that hearing reports of Prince offering advice to Brown made her reflect on her own history, saying, “I was like, ‘Wow, he must have forgotten’.”
