Rumors: Ceasefire Coming in Lebanon – Matched to Iran Pause?

Has Marco Rubio pulled off a miracle? Or has he complicated a clean strategy to break the back of the Iranian regime?

The US Secretary of State made history this week by hosting the first-ever direct talks between Lebanon and Israel, which have remained technically at war since Israel became a state. Over the last 45 years, the war has changed from PLO infiltration of Lebanon and Beirut to Iranian infiltration through Hezbollah. The official Lebanese government has pledged a number of times to disarm Hezbollah and take direct control of the area between the Litani River and Israel, as well as the Bekaa Valley, but has failed to comply for over 40 years.

Reportedly, today we will get more groundbreaking news about a temporary cease-fire. No one will yet confirm it, but the threads of this rumor make some sense. However, the source requires a lot of considering:

A ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon will be announced tonight after peace talks and pressure from Iran, Lebanese outlet Al Mayadeen reported on Wednesday, citing a high-ranking Iranian security source.

The ceasefire, according to the Hezbollah-affiliated outlet, will last for one week and end at the same time as the ongoing temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran.

The US will serve as a sponsor and partner of Israel during the ceasefire and will be responsible for monitoring Israeli actions for the duration, the source told Al Mayadeen.

A Hezbollah media source? Yeah, color me skeptical, with about three coats of “Sure Pal” amber. That source gets even less credible when we drill down a bit to Al-Mayadeen’s source:

An Iranian official tells the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Mayadeen news outlet that a ceasefire will take effect in Lebanon starting tonight.

According to the official, the move comes after pressure from Iran, and the ceasefire will last for one week, until the end of the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

This looks more like Iranian wish-casting than actual progress. The Iranians want a PR win as well as an end to the blockade strangling their access to desperately needed hard currency. If they can push the US into a ceasefire in Lebanon, they can argue that they will comply with the terms of the ceasefire and allow traffic to move through the Strait of Hormuz again.

So is this sheer nonsense? Maybe not. Donald Trump has told the media that he sees no need to extend the ceasefire with Iran, hinting that something big will come before the weekend:

US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he was not considering extending a ceasefire with Iran, predicting “an amazing two days ahead” amid renewed diplomatic efforts with Tehran for an agreement to end the war.

Trump told ABC News he believed an extension was not most likely necessary, with the two-week ceasefire set to end on April 22, hours after predicting a second round of talks with Iran in Pakistan in the next two days.

“I think you’re going to be watching an amazing two days ahead,” Trump said, reiterating his prediction that there would be developments in the coming 48 hours. “I really do.”

“It could end either way, but I think a deal is preferable because then they can rebuild,” he said. “They really do have a different regime now. No matter what, we took out the radicals. They’re gone, no longer with us.”

Does that mean that the US and Israel are aligning battlefields to pressure Iran into conceding on its nuclear-weapons program? Maybe, but that seems like a big leap from where the Iranians were on Saturday. They would also have to concede on disarming Hezbollah and pushing them north of the Litani to stay. That seems only possible with regime change in Tehran, which Trump keeps claiming but without much indication of moderation from the remnants in charge. Those hardline elements don’t seem likely to have shifted that far after just 48 hours of a blockade, but on the other hand, it’s getting very clear that they are really out of options.

So what’s the story? Others are beginning to pass along indications that Lebanon and Israel may come to a cessation of sorts:

A Lebanese official told Al Arabi TV there are positive indications regarding Lebanon’s ceasefire request, but noted they have not yet been officially informed.

Stay tuned. Strange things may be afoot at the Circle I.

Editor’s Note: For decades, former presidents have been all talk and no action. Now, Donald Trump is eliminating the threat from Iran once and for all.
