Said the Spider to the Fly: EU Issues Invitation to Canada to Be Its First ‘Associate’

For a while there, I thought petite Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was just flexing his minor muscles for local consumption and the elections in Quebec where his party is currently polling poorly.

But with this latest move, I do have to wonder if this globalist agenda wasn’t his aim all along – glomming onto any excuse to move the Syrupeans’ relatively minuscule economy out from under the protective, and what’s been nurturing umbrella of the United States into the arms of the European Borg Collective.

I mean, he IS THAT GUY to his core with the globalist banker and United Nations climate envoy pedigree to boot…

Mark Carney was previously appointed as a member of the World Economic Forum Foundation Board (Board of Trustees) in November 2019, when he was serving as the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance and former Governor of the Bank of England and Bank of Canada

…who, even as an anointed (the first never to have held elected office), then-elected Canadian Prime Minister, still shows up at his old stomping grounds to renew the ties that bind.

Mark Carney really is a WEF Davos man

The political ideology of our prime minister and his government cannot be adequately defined by the traditional right-left vocabulary of capitalism versus socialism. Rather, it is best described as corporatism or stakeholder capitalism as espoused by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the Davos elites. That philosophical approach to the economy may be unfamiliar to most Canadians, but it influences how Mark Carney is governing the country and it has important implications for democratic accountability and individual prosperity.

It is not a conspiracy to say the WEF has exercised enormous influence over western governance during the past five decades. It operates quite openly, even if many people are unaware of its existence. Its founder, Klaus Schwab, once boasted about “penetrating” Justin Trudeau’s cabinet, more than half of whose members went through WEF leadership programs.

…Corporatism’s assumptions counter the historical liberal worldview based on consent of the governed, institutional accountability and rule of law. It differs from the free enterprise market economy where companies are accountable to shareholders who focus on profitability rather than external managerial direction that takes into account broader societal objectives.

The problems with the noblesse oblige WEF model are therefore both philosophical and practical. It undermines democratic and constitutional governance by empowering unaccountable actors with self-serving and ideological agendas and by imbedding bureaucratic structures that are hard to dismantle by normal electoral means. And, instead of market discipline, it relies on technocratic and state judgment to pick winners and losers and imposes a costly regulatory burden that increases risk and drives away capital. The effect is to undermine productivity and weaken economic performance.

Carney is on what truly seems to be his home turf this week – Europe. And he’s in Strasbourg, where the European Parliament is meeting.

The unelected Empress of Europe, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, dropped a bit of a bombshell during her speech as she announced she had presented the Syrupean leader with what amounts to a proposed Welcome Wagon gift basket.

Canada has been invited to become the first “associate member” of the EU by the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen.

In an unprecedented offer, von der Leyen said on Wednesday that the EU and Canada “see the world with the same eyes” through shared democratic values and common approaches to many big issues, from AI to climate breakdown, the Ukraine war and geopolitics.

Speaking in the presence of the Canadian prime minister, Mark Carney, at the European parliament in Strasbourg, she said: “We want to bring the relationship with Canada to the highest level possible. We must urgently reimagine our partnerships. So, I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada to be the first associate member of the EU.”

Carney, who is due to address the parliament on Thursday, has called for a “unique alliance” with the EU as Canada seeks to reduce its heavy dependence on US trade.

Oh, Canada.

What of your home and native land?

They won’t be ‘yours’ any longer.

…Von der Leyen said the existing EU-Canada trade deal would be upgraded to an “alliance for the future” to create a “common prosperity and economic security space”.

She said the two sides would also create a tech alliance, integrate defence industrial bases and make the Arctic a “flagship joint project”. EU officials are especially interested in Canada’s energy and natural resources. Von der Leyen pitched joint work on energy, critical minerals, batteries, AI, quantum computing, cybersecurity and economic security.

But the Canadian Prime Minister is apparently in his ‘native’ element and soaking up all the TDS love the Europeans can slather on him like the high-fat butter they churn out.

…Carney is expected to get a rapturous reception when he gives his own address to the European parliament. His approach to dealing with Trump has attracted widespread praise among MEPs.

And make no mistake – it was a bombshell to leaders of EU members, who were completely caught off guard by the tender.

But hey, guys – you’re the ones who have an Empress who can just make it up as she goes, remember?

— Jacek Saryusz-Wolski (@JSaryuszWolski) September 16, 2026

EU capitals were taken by surprise when von der Leyen announced in her speech on the “State of the Union” “associate membership” for Canada. The EU Treaty does not provide for such a formula, only association whose beneficiaries are already a number of neighboring countries

At a presser, Carney tried to explain his machinations in Europe away as a move towards Canadian independence…

…Basically, the objective is to make Canada more independent, more resilient, more sovereign. It’s as basic as that, so we can live our lives as we want to…

Carney gets asked if visa free travel or other visa opportunities are part of the discussions between Canada and the EU.
He says that’s one aspect of the discussions but then quickly brushes it off and goes into making Canada more sovereign.
When all else fails, just keep… pic.twitter.com/q1GtWMqZb9

— Ryan Gerritsen🇨🇦🇳🇱 (@ryangerritsen) September 15, 2026

…When all else fails, just keep repeating “sovereign” “resilience” “deepening” “strengthening” “building”

Everyone is well aware that ‘independence‘ and ‘living as one wants to‘ are the polar opposites of the entire point of the European Union.

Sovereign??? Does he lnow the message of sovereign?? I think he has sovereignty mixed up with his dream of being a European elite. He’s nothing more then a lying unethical dictator!!!

All one has to do, besides looking at the shackles holding current EU members in their misery, is revisit what it is costing Britain to this day, over a decade removed from Brexit. Thanks to the negotiated terms of what was supposed to be the UK’s new independence from the EU, British fishermen must still compete with French boats in English waters for another 11 years. And those rubber boats filled with North Africans who are flooding the country are all subject to the still-in-effect terms of the European Convention on Human Rights. They can’t send them back.

What good was Brexit? The British extrication from European control was designed to fail.

And here is the smiling teeny Canadian popinjay handing over his country without so much as a by-your-leave from…well…anyone.

And there are questions about that, as you’d imagine.

So, Canada is now Carney’s kingdom, and Parliament isn’t required for major, lifelong, statewide real decisions? Just out of curiosity! Commonwealth principles gone and now WEF doctrine on?

CANADIANS ARE WAKING UP AND GOING, WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED?

Opinion pieces in the Canadian papers are already pointing out that if Iceland rejected the EU’s sly overtures, why on earth would Carney think Canadians would be any different once the ‘elbows up’ TDS fades? Or when Canadians, now viewing the EU favorably, find how much of their lifestyle would radically change with EU diktats they’d be obliged to follow, or else.

That might also explain the prime minister’s underhanded way of announcing his plans and the continuous flow of slippery weasel words reporters encounter trying to pin him or his office associates down to any brass-tack details.

It has been an exemplary few days in the world of prime ministerial communications, though not in a good way. PMO Comms World hasn’t changed much since Justin Trudeau’s departure, interestingly. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s gang is still far too cute for its own long-term good, launching trial balloons and then deflating them, leveraging foreign (especially American) media when able, and apparently believing that their popularity in the polls is proof of this strategy’s success.

It isn’t. It’s just proof of what Carney is able to get away with these days.

…I won’t belabour the issue of why so much of this EU-relationship discourse makes absolutely no sense. Icelanders rejected EU membership talks 53 per cent to 47 in a referendum last month, with 83 per cent turnout. At a time when you might expect Iceland to be eager for more geopolitical shelter, the “no” campaign won the day with a message focusing on sovereignty — especially Iceland’s indispensable fisheries andits cultural tolerance (though it’s far from universal) of whaling, which is strictly banned in EU waters.

Preserving Canadian sovereignty is exactly the argument the Liberals would face if they pursued any serious kind of economic integration with Europe — especially assuming the process dragged on past the end of Trump’s presidency, when a lot of Canadians will suddenly rediscover their love of the status quo.

Sealed with a kiss…sort of. More of a wing and a prayer.

…State of the Union in Strasbourg. Mark Carney in the room. She calls him dear Mark, says the relationship should go as high as it can, and asks to open that door. Chamber stands. They close the distance. Cheek kisses. Loud applause. The clip looks like a wedding toast. The legal text does not exist.

This is not accession. No vote in Ottawa to join Brussels. It is a political offer on top of CETA: manufacturing, defence industry, Arctic, minerals, AI. Reuters and others noted the squeeze both sides feel from Washington and from a harder world. Politico also reported EU capitals were not briefed and that a real associate status could trip over treaties, steel, cars, and food rules.

A kiss travels faster than a treaty. The question is which one they meant.

The most interesting fact I have learned in these past few weeks of what I believe to be a wholly Carney-manufactured Syrupean hissy fit is just how massive the US presence is compared to the world. I don’t ever recall having given it that much thought other than ‘we’re the biggest,’ but what does that really mean in terms of our dealing with other countries like Canada.

I wish I could find it (and I’m trying), but a rumpled Canadian economist laid out some numbers in an interview about the tariff situation, saying there was no way the Canadian tariff would have any impact on the United States whatsoever, but it will absolutely crush Canada.

That had my jaw on the floor, and I went to double-check them, and I want to leave them with you all.

The global average for imports as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) is 47.50 percent. A country’s economy is considered ‘closed’ if it has exports at 15 percent of its GDP.

In 2024, imports were 14.04 percent of the American GDP, and our historical average is even less. We are essentially self-sufficient, with obviously some notable exceptions thanks to off-shoring.

The latest value from 2024 is 14.04 percent, an increase from 13.88 percent in 2023. In comparison, the world average is 47.50 percent, based on data from 166 countries. Historically, the average for the USA from 1970 to 2024 is 12.08 percent. The minimum value, 5.2 percent, was reached in 1970 while the maximum of 17.44 percent was recorded in 2008. See the global rankings for that indicator or use the country comparator to compare trends over time.

An interesting dry economist type note:

…If imports are about 15 percent or less of GDP the economy is considered relatively closed. That, for example, applies to the U.S. In contrast, many small European countries import over 40 percent of the products they consume. They are considered more open to international trade.

I wouldn’t so much call it ‘open’ to trade as ‘dependent’ on it, and they’re screwed if something goes sideways.

As this fellow said in his interview, numbers-wise, the US basically doesn’t need anyone else in the world. And the idea that Canada’s 15 percent of that overall 14 percent will make a dent in a $32.50 trillion economy is ludicrous.

China’s GDP comes in second at $20 trillion.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained the math surrounding claims that a trade war with Canada would be ‘inflationary.’

TREASURY SECRETARY SCOTT BESSENT WARNS CANADA THAT THEY WANTED THE BENEFITS OF BEING A STATE WITHOUT BEING A STATE & NOW COMPANIES LIKE SAPPORO BREWING ARE MOVING PRODUCTION FROM CANADA TO AMERICA

SCOTT BESSENT: “Last week I had the Treasury econ team go through and said, what… https://t.co/rLXMFUc3iA pic.twitter.com/hSydGoZMY6

— Zach Jones – Secretary of Psyops (@ZachJones1994) September 9, 2026

…“Last week I had the Treasury econ team go through and said, what could this cause, these tariffs add to inflation in the US? If there was 100% pass-through, which there never is, 0.02. 0.02. So not even a rounding error. There is no inflationary pass-through. So the pain to the US, there is none.

And, you know, as a matter of fact, we just saw over the weekend Sapporo Brewing, the Japanese brewer, said that they are moving because of all the trade uncertainty. They are moving their production to the US. And if I were the Canadians, I’d be careful because they wanted the benefits of being a state without being a state. And now that the arrangements may be splintering, everyone’s going to come to our side.”

*Canada needs America to survive, not the other way around and this can be a very painful lesson for Canada or a mutually beneficial relationship. It’s up to them.*

Businesses will exit Canada nearly as quickly as they are leaving the European Union, if they haven’t already folded under the pressure of overregulation and insane energy prices.

So it begs the question whether this entire tilting-at-a-windmill performance by Carney is a campaign stunt or literally a campaign to turn Canada over to the globalists he’s most comfortable with.

Because either way, the eight-hundred-pound orange gorilla just to his South doesn’t have to do a thing but watch him squirm.

Canada, in a trade war with the US, will collapse faster than the EU can get a rubber boat floated to save it – that’s guaranteed.
