Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner used a Planned Parenthood endorsement event Monday to reveal his personal history of sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing.
Platner received the endorsement of Planned Parenthood Action Fund during a press conference focused largely on abortion, healthcare policy, and criticism of Collins’ 2018 vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
While discussing healthcare access, Platner told attendees that he had personally received STI testing through Planned Parenthood when he was younger.
“I myself, at a younger age, received treat-. Uh, what’s the word? I got STI checks,” said Platner as the audience laughed.
“And it’s not an embarrassing thing. It’s a smart thing to do, especially when you’re … younger,” Platner added.
Platner was there advocating for universal health care, praising Planned Parenthood‘s role in providing services and highlighting the care he had received himself. The specific care Platner mentioned was from VA benefits, a system that is neither single-payer nor available to everyone.

Platner’s personal history continues to receive scrutiny. On June 4, The New York Times reported that several former romantic partners described relationships with Platner as “volatile” and “toxic.” The Times interviewed more than two dozen people, including six women who had previously been involved with the Democratic candidate.
Three former girlfriends described behavior they found “unsettling” or intimidating, according to the NYT report. One former girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, alleged that Platner sometimes grabbed her hard enough to leave marks during arguments and described other incidents she said left her frightened. The Times report followed earlier revelations that the married Platner had exchanged sexually explicit messages with multiple women, according to ABC News.
Platner has endured several scandals in recent months, including comments from re-surfaced Reddit posts, where he made excuses for sexual assault. (RELATED: Nevermind The Nazi Tatoo And Sexual Assault Excuse-Making, Liberals Finally Fed Up With Their Candidate)
The Democratic nominee also used the event to attack Collins, claiming that she either misled voters or was being misled herself when she supported Kavanaugh’s nomination.
Collins, who has described herself as supportive of abortion rights while also backing some Republican judicial nominees, is seeking another term. According to the Maine Wire, Planned Parenthood’s endorsement represents one of the highest-profile endorsements of Platner’s campaign to date.
