Democratic lawmakers are facing criticism following their decision to remain seated during a moment in President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address when he asked members of Congress to stand in support of prioritizing American citizens over illegal aliens.

During the speech Tuesday night, Trump addressed several issues, including what he described as gender transition care for children, fraud in Minnesota, violent repeat offenders and crimes committed by illegal immigrants. At one point, he directly challenged lawmakers in the chamber.

“If you agree with this statement, then stand up and show your support: The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens,” Trump said.

Not a single Democrat stood in response.

“You should be ashamed of yourself for not standing up,” Trump said, looking toward the Democratic side of the aisle. “You should be ashamed of yourself.”

The moment quickly drew attention online and from Republican campaign organizations.

On Wednesday, the National Republican Congressional Committee signaled that it intended to use the clip in future political messaging.

“Every single vulnerable House Democrat should get comfortable re-watching the moment they revealed they’re nothing more than America-hating scums who stayed glued to their seats while President Trump called on protecting American citizens over criminal illegal immigrants. The ads write themselves,” NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella said in a statement to FOX.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., was later asked about the decision by Democrats not to stand during Trump’s remarks. Schumer has faced internal criticism from some members of his party who believe he has not taken a strong enough stance against the president and could face a primary challenge in 2028.

When questioned about the failure of Democrats to stand in agreement with the statement that it was their “first duty… to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens,” Schumer responded, “Of course, we support Americans. We’re not going to be a prop in Donald Trump’s little show.”

The exchange added to ongoing debate about the optics of the moment and how it may be used in future campaigns. Republican strategists have argued that the footage provides a clear contrast for voters heading into the 2026 midterms and beyond.

The State of the Union has frequently served as a stage for partisan clashes, but the visual of Democrats remaining seated during the specific call to prioritize American citizens over illegal aliens has become a focal point in post-speech analysis.

The incident comes amid broader national discussions about immigration policy and public safety. Trump has repeatedly framed border enforcement and immigration restrictions as essential to protecting American citizens.

Democratic lawmakers have pushed back on various aspects of his immigration agenda, often focusing on humanitarian concerns and due process.

The refusal to stand has now become part of the political narrative following the address. Republican groups have indicated that the clip will feature prominently in campaign messaging, particularly in competitive House districts.

As the 2026 election cycle approaches, both parties are expected to revisit key moments from the State of the Union, including Trump’s call for lawmakers to publicly affirm that protecting American citizens is the federal government’s first duty.
