Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said Monday the second illegal alien suspect in an attempted robbery of a United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer was taken into custody.
The agent was attacked while he was with a female companion at 11:50 p.m. Saturday by two men on a moped in Fort Washington Park in Manhattan in what appeared to be an attempted robbery, according to a Sunday post on X by DHS. Noem provided the update during a press conference after she visited the wounded officer, stating the second suspect entered the United States illegally. “Fortunately for us today, our officer survived. He survived. He’s going through a very difficult time and I would ask that you respect him and his family and his friend who was with him and what they have gone through,” Noem said during an eight-minute statement. “But I would also say that we can’t guarantee the next victim of these dangerous criminals will be treated the same or will be able to get through this dangerous situation. We were able to bring the second individual in and have detained him as well and he will face consequences and hopefully strong prosecution for his crimes and his involvement on Saturday night.”
Noem later identified the second suspect as Christhian Aybar-Berroa, an illegal immigrant from the Dominican Republic, in a Monday post on X.
“He entered the country illegally in 2022 under the Biden Administration and was ordered for final removed in 2023 by an immigration judge,” Noem posted. “He has a criminal record in New York City and detainers were IGNORED thanks to @ericadamsfornyc sanctuary city policies. He was arrested for reckless endangerment and larceny and was released before ICE could get him off the streets.”
The video shows the exchange of gunfire, during which the off-duty agent was shot in the face, but returned fire, hitting one of the two assailants. New York Police Department radio traffic posted on X indicated the agent was shot in the mouth during the incident.
The DHS identified the wounded subject as Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez in a post on X, saying he entered the United States illegally before being apprehended and released in Arizona.
CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott told reporters the second assailant had also been apprehended and released at the U.S. border after Noem spoke.
“We should not be here today. The reason these two assailants are inside the United States today is because of failed border policies by the Biden administration,” Scott said. “I personally warned the Biden adminsitration against open border policies in 2021. I was ignored and exactly what I predicted, many of us predicted, happened. Total chaos along the border. The two individuals, assailants were released into the United States after being apprehended because of failed policies.”
