A proposed Islamic-centered development in Texas has drawn attention from state officials and national commentators, with legal challenges underway as the project faces opposition at multiple levels of government.

The issue was discussed during a recent exchange between Fox News host Laura Ingraham and Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, who outlined concerns about the project and broader demographic and policy issues in the state.

Ingraham raised the topic by asking, “Congressman. There’s a lot about this. It’s kind of murky and unclear, but an Islamic centered city in Texas, what could possibly be wrong with this?”

Roy responded by referencing demographic changes in parts of Texas and ongoing debates about language use and community composition.

“Well, you know, a friend of ours in a suburban red county here in Texas, they did a poll in their elementary school said, what language is spoken at home, English came in fourth. Spanish was number one, Farsi was number two, other languages number three and English number four is what we’re dealing with in Texas right now,” Roy said.

He also referenced recent events in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, stating, “You got the HP one scandal that we saw yesterday in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.”

Roy described the proposed development as an expansion of an existing model, comparing it to a previously established institution.

“And here’s the thing with epic, what they’re doing here. This is a rebranded epic. This is a epic on steroids, 400 acre campus, and the governor and the Attorney General are rightly trying to stop it,” he said.

According to Roy, Texas officials, including Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton, have taken steps to challenge the development.

He said a judge in Travis County initially blocked efforts tied to enforcement actions through the Texas Workforce Commission but that the decision has since been appealed.

“A liberal judge in Travis County tried to stand in the way of what we were doing through the Texas Workforce Commission. Fortunately, they’ve already appealed that and gotten that stopped for now, the liberal judge’s ruling, they’ll have to keep going up the chain,” Roy said.

Roy added that additional legal strategies are being pursued.

“But there’s other lawsuits going on right now, going after this multiple Municipal Utility District and other ways to try to stop the development, is the way the governor puts it,” he said.

He pointed to existing communities in Plano as an example of what he believes the development could resemble.

“But the fact is, this already exists in Plano. This mosque already exists. There’s already communities in Plano where it’s pretty much known by everybody that it’s Islam only. It’s Muslim only. The realtors will only show it to Muslim people who want to buy there,” Roy said.

Roy suggested that the proposed project could serve as a model for similar developments in other parts of the country.

“This is just going to put it on steroids. And I think you tweeted out yesterday, this is going to be the model, you know, and the template, I think templates, what you said for the country,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of continued legal and political efforts to block the development.

“So we’ve got to stop it. Paxton and Governor Abbott are both working hard to stop it. When I’m Attorney General, I promise you we’re going to stop it,” Roy said.

Roy also addressed broader concerns about ideology and governance, stating, “But you got to make clear to the world that Islam is a political ideology. It is not something that can hide behind the First Amendment.”

He further referenced statements he attributed to religious leaders associated with the project.

“And they’re making it clear the Imams that are behind all of this, they say outrageous things. They talk about being able to take women as concubines in war. They talk about marrying off young, single digit and low teen girls in the marriage. Shari is incompatible with Western civilization, like Charlie Kirk said,” Roy said.
