A woman was shot and killed by police late March 7, 2026, after allegedly pointing what was later determined to be a pellet gun at officers responding to a reported robbery in Los Angeles, according to authorities.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m., when officers assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division responded to a radio call of a robbery in progress at a convenience store located at 15300 South Figueroa Street.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers observed a suspect behind the store’s front counter.

Police later identified the individual as 53-year-old Cynthia Anne Ivie Akers.

According to authorities, officers issued multiple verbal commands in an effort to gain compliance from Akers. Police said those commands were disregarded.

Officials stated that Akers then moved toward the counter area, retrieved a handgun from a zippered bag, and pointed it in the direction of responding officers.

That action led to an officer-involved shooting.

Akers was struck by gunfire during the encounter.

Officers took her into custody and immediately began rendering medical aid while requesting emergency medical assistance.

Personnel from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene.

Despite life-saving efforts, Akers was pronounced dead at the location.

Investigators later determined that the weapon Akers was holding was a pellet gun.

The item was recovered at the scene and booked into evidence as part of the investigation.

Authorities confirmed that no officers were injured during the incident.

No additional members of the public were harmed.

The Force Investigation Division responded to the scene and has assumed responsibility for the investigation into the shooting.

Officials said the review will examine the circumstances leading up to the encounter, the actions taken by officers, and the use of force.

Police have not released the names of the officers involved in the shooting.

Standard protocol requires that formal interviews be conducted before additional details are made public.

The incident began as a reported robbery and escalated after officers encountered the suspect inside the store.

Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and review available information, including witness statements and any surveillance footage from the location.

Authorities have not provided additional details regarding the initial robbery call or what led Akers to be inside the store behind the counter at the time officers arrived.

The investigation remains ongoing.
