Most people don’t know that there is Spanish sovereign territory on the African continent.
I sure didn’t. But it turns out that there are bits and pieces in what you think is Morocco that are, in fact, part of Spain, including islands and cities in what you probably think is Morocco.
Ceuta is one such tiny bit of Spain on the African continent. It is literally Spanish territory, similar to the little spur of Minnesota that looks like it should be part of Canada because it is not connected and is embedded in Canada, or the Kaliningrad Oblast, which is Russia, but entirely surrounded by Lithuania and Poland.
Weird, I know. But there it is.
Right now, today, the City of Ceuta is being invaded by Moroccans (and likely people from other countries) through that border. They are not coming in boats. They are storming the border, and in some cases, border guards have opened the gates to let them stream in.

Ceuta is a city of only 65,000, and at this rate, the invaders will outnumber the population of the city. It is a crisis so great that the city government is begging the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to declare a State of Emergency, which so far he has declined to do.

Sanchez is famously welcoming of illegal migrants, having just given legal status to hundreds of thousands, making them eligible for work, benefits, and almost as importantly, free travel throughout the Schengen area, which encompasses most of Western Europe.
The Spanish Supreme Court recently determined that Spain cannot expel anybody who crossed the border illegally without “due process,” and we all know what that means: it will be a long, laborious process, and the likelihood that the Sanchez government will even try to do so asymptotically approaches zero.

As with the migrant caravans that the Biden administration welcomed and the United Nations, USAID, and many NGOs facilitated, this is a highly coordinated effort. These are not random people seeking a better life or trying to escape poverty making a trek to reach the Promised Land; this is quite literally an invasion, with the majority of the migrants crossing being military-aged males, sprinkled with the occasional women and children.

Morocco maintains functioning schools, universities, hospitals, a working economy free from war and famine in a very unstable region, has different projects, and today there are more opportunities than ever. However, in Morocco, criminal punishment is severe. & those who violate Moroccan law exploit a structural advantage because Sanchez’ permissive immigration policy and willingness to invoke human rights rhetoric to shield criminals provide sanctuary to them. Moroccan authorities cannot pursue offenders across the border into Spanish territory or Ceuta and whenever it did it created a scandal one way or another, these criminals know this and leverage this gap to the maximum.
Obviously, the Spanish government, which says it is taking “immediate action” to address the situation, will be bringing all these invaders to the Spanish mainland, where they will be given all the rights that all illegal migrants are amounting to indefinite leave to stay and perhaps, eventually, a path to citizenship as Sanchez has granted prior illegal aliens.
He can’t leave 30,000 or more refugees in the tiny enclave of Ceuta, after all.

The Interior Ministry said it will protect border integrity but cannot declare a formal national emergency solely over migration.
As a result, Ceuta’s local authorities cannot access special emergency funds or deploy the army.
The Ministry insists on using only standard police reinforcements and regular legal procedures.
Sanchez has openly stated that his goal is to use the influx of migrants to dilute the electoral power of Spanish citizens whom he considers “far right,” which is why he is fighting for a rapid path to citizenship for all comers. He doesn’t deny the thesis that the transnationalists are trying to replace the European population with a more pliable one; he embraces it.

They took the most conspiratorial interpretation of the “Great Replacement” that is not even shared by most far right parties, namely it being a coordinated elite plan to reduce the native European share of the population, and actually turned it into policy – while also bypassing parliament, I might add.
The next Spanish parliamentary elections must take place by August 22nd next year, so he still has a year to implement his agenda. Likely no longer than that, given the popular opposition to his current government, which surely will grow as the invasion does. His wife is under investigation for corruption, and opposition parties are growing in strength.
He is striking while the iron is hot.
