White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller said federal authorities are nearing a major milestone in border construction, as immigration policy remains a central focus in Washington discussions that also featured Fox News host Brian Kilmeade and Rep. Mike Lawler.

Miller said U.S. Customs and Border Protection is close to reaching a pace of building one mile of new border wall per day.

“I just learned today that CBP says they will soon be at the milestone of one mile per day in new border wall,” Miller said.

He added that the construction includes new infrastructure along the Rio Grande designed to address water-based crossings.

“Nice that includes, by the way, a water barrier,” he said. “So on the Rio Grande, they are putting a water barrier in place.”

Miller said the project is already underway and expanding.

“There’s five miles so far,” he said. “But it’s going to stretch all the way across to stop water based human smuggling.”

Kilmeade raised the broader issue of immigration reform, noting that many policymakers have argued border security must come first before other changes are considered.

“So a couple of things,” Kilmeade said. “Stephen everyone said it’s impossible to talk about immigration reform without sealing the border.”

He added that concern extends across party lines.

“Nobody I know, Democrat or Republican who does not believe the border is sealed,” Kilmeade said.

Kilmeade then referenced concerns from industries that rely on immigrant labor and pointed to a proposal from Rep. Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York.

“That leads some to say, like farmers and meat packers, what about some of the illegals here that are helping my company,” Kilmeade said. “Which led Mike Lawler, a Republican in a battleground district, to roll out the Dignity Act.”

Lawler outlined the framework of the proposal, which focuses on individuals who have been in the United States for an extended period and meet certain conditions.

“It says if you’ve been here more than five years,” Lawler said. “So not the people that came under Joe Biden’s disastrous administration.”

He described the criteria that would apply to those seeking legal status.

“But the people who have been in this country more than five years, 10, 15, 20 years,” Lawler said. “Whose children and grandchildren may in fact be American citizens.”

Lawler said the proposal includes several requirements.

“They would qualify if they have not committed a crime,” he said. “They pay back taxes, they pay a fine, they have a job, and they do not collect government benefits.”

He emphasized that the proposal would not grant full citizenship.

“They would qualify for a legal status, not citizenship,” Lawler said.

Kilmeade then asked Miller to respond to the proposal.

“So a little about what he mentioned,” Kilmeade said. “But here’s some of the facts with the Dignity Act. Where do you stand with it, Stephen?”

Miller reiterated the administration’s position opposing amnesty policies.

“Well, you know that this administration opposes amnesty,” Miller said. “President Trump has always been clear in his opposition to amnesty.”

He said the broader conversation should focus on the long-term impact of immigration policy.

“I want to reframe this whole conversation, Brian,” Miller said. “If I could to something that President Trump has been very focused on for a long time.”

Miller said that focus centers on strengthening the country.

“And that’s about having the kind of immigration to this country that makes us stronger, not weaker,” he said.

He argued that the discussion often overlooks the larger picture.

“I think this conversation gets siloed too often,” Miller said. “When we have to look at the whole picture.”

Miller referenced a recent violent crime case as part of his argument about border policy.

“You saw the recent tragic case where an illegal alien from Haiti bludgeoned a woman to death in broad daylight with a hammer,” he said.

He continued with details of the incident.

“Smashing her skull in one hammer blow after another,” Miller said.

Miller linked the case to broader concerns about immigration enforcement.

“That’s what happens when you have open borders to this country from some of the most dangerous parts of the world,” he said.

He added that such cases are not isolated.

“That’s one person that Biden led in the Democrats let in to maim and murder our citizens,” Miller said. “But there are 1000s more.”

Miller said immigration policy has long-term effects on public systems.

“When you have open migration, as we’ve had Brian,” he said. “Largely, it was very bad under Biden, but largely for five decades before President Trump.”

He raised questions about the impact on infrastructure and services.

“How do your schools work?” Miller said. “How do your hospitals work? How does your economy work?”

Miller said the administration is focused on an approach centered on economic contribution.

“So President Trump has said, we want to have high value migration into this country not low value migration,” he said.

He added that enforcement remains a priority.

“And we have to deal with the fact that we have millions of people here who are on welfare,” Miller said. “Who are not contributing, who commit a lot of crime, who consume a lot of public resources.”

Miller said the administration believes those individuals should be returned to their home countries.

“And it’s in the best interest of this country for those people to be humanely returned home,” he said.

He concluded by calling for a broader shift in how immigration policy is discussed.

“And so this old Washington conversation about amnesty is missing the whole point,” Miller said. “The real conversation is, how do we have an immigration policy that makes America stronger and more unified, not weaker and more divided?”
