Stunning Number of Democrats Claim Americans Focus Too Much on 9/11 [WATCH]

A new poll conducted ahead of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks found differences between Democrats and Republicans over how Americans remember the attacks and how their aftermath continues to affect the country, as reported by The New York Post.

The YouGov survey, released Monday, found that 13% of registered Democrats believe Americans currently focus too much on remembering the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

The finding comes as the nation prepares to mark 25 years since the attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people after Islamic terrorists hijacked four passenger planes.

Two aircraft were flown into New York City’s World Trade Center, another struck the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed in a rural area of Pennsylvania.

Among Democrats surveyed, 19% said Americans focus too little on remembering Sept. 11. That compared with 43% of Republicans who said Americans focus too little on the attacks.

The survey also found a partisan difference over whether Sept. 11 should become a national holiday commemorating those who died.

Sixty-two percent of Republicans said the anniversary should become a national holiday, compared with 43% of Democrats.

Questions about the long-term effects of the attacks also produced significant differences between the two parties.

Seventy-one percent of Democrats said the Sept. 11 attacks continue to affect how Muslims are treated in the United States, compared with 42% of Republicans.

The survey found an even larger gap when respondents were asked whether Muslims have been treated worse than people of other religions since the attacks.

Seventy-two percent of Democrats said Muslims have been treated worse, while 28% of Republicans agreed.

The poll also examined views about political extremism and violent attacks in the United States since Sept. 11.

Democrats were more likely than Republicans to identify right-wing extremism as responsible for the greatest number of violent attacks in the country since the 2001 attacks.

Forty-five percent of Democrats said right-wing extremists had committed the greatest number of violent attacks since Sept. 11. Only 6% of Republicans gave the same response.

Republicans were more likely to point to left-wing extremism or Islamic extremism.

Twenty-six percent of Republicans said left-wing extremists had been responsible for the greatest number of violent attacks, compared with 2% of Democrats.

When asked about Islamic extremism, 29% of Republicans and 14% of Democrats said it had been responsible for the greatest number of violent attacks since Sept. 11.

The results highlight continued differences between Democrats and Republicans over the legacy of the attacks, including how prominently Sept. 11 should remain in public memory and how Americans view the treatment of Muslims in the years since.

The anniversary is expected to bring renewed attention to the events of Sept. 11, 2001, when the four hijacked passenger planes were used in attacks in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people and led to sweeping changes in U.S. national security and foreign policy.

They also prompted years of debate about terrorism, immigration, religious discrimination, military operations overseas and domestic security.

The YouGov survey provides a snapshot of how Americans view those issues 25 years later, with the poll showing particularly wide differences between the two major political parties.

The finding that 13% of Democrats believe Americans focus too much on remembering Sept. 11 comes as communities across the country prepare for the 25th anniversary.

At the same time, the survey indicates that Republicans are considerably more likely than Democrats to favor making Sept. 11 a national holiday and to say Americans do not focus enough on remembering the attacks.

Democrats, meanwhile, were substantially more likely to say the attacks continue to affect the treatment of Muslims in the United States.

The poll’s findings come as Americans prepare to commemorate a pivotal event that remains a defining moment for those who experienced it and for generations that followed.

The 25th anniversary will provide another national moment of remembrance while also highlighting continuing disagreements over the legacy of the attacks and their impact on American society.
