Sydney Sweeney has once again turned a provocative advertising campaign into a spectacle, and her critics have once again supplied the publicity.

The familiar cycle is already unfolding around her latest promotion, this time for the sports prediction market Novig, as reported by PJ Media.

The formula has worked beautifully for Sweeney because the advertisements generate attention before the outrage even begins.

Once critics react, their complaints spread the campaign across social media and legacy media, producing what the public relations business calls “earned media.”

Gold. Upgraded. Buy real gold from $1. Store it in America. Sell it with one click.

Novig’s campaign is called “Just Sports,” and its attention-grabbing concept places a fully or partially nude Sweeney alongside sports equipment.

Footballs, basketballs, a soccer ball, and a hockey net appear in the 60-second advertisement.

Variety reported that Sweeney shared the Novig promotion on Instagram last Wednesday, where it had accumulated 1.1 million likes at the time of the report.

The magazine identified Sweeney as the star of Euphoria while describing the campaign’s provocative presentation.

The audio track features Andersen. Paak’s Come Down, which includes a rock version of the Israeli national anthem.

That music accompanies an advertisement designed to make Novig and its prediction marketplace difficult to ignore.

Novig is a United States sports prediction market where users “trade” on games against other people using the platform.

Unlike a traditional sportsbook arrangement, users are not playing against a sportsbook “house.”

The company’s name refers to the “vig,” meaning the built-in profit margin collected by a bookmaker.

That charge might range from 4% to 10%, depending on the wager and arrangement described in the source.

Under the example offered, someone who bets $100 on the Steelers and loses could owe the bookmaker $110 when the vig is 10%.

Novig’s pitch is that it removes that fee from the transaction, which explains both the company name and the tagline “Just Sports.”

The campaign’s central audience is decidedly male, particularly men from 18 to 45 years old because of their discretionary income.

At the same time, the demographics surrounding sports betting can extend toward 65 because of gambling addiction.

After the advertisement attracted attention, critics objected to Sweeney’s presentation and its connection to sports.

Variety described the backlash by saying the campaign had prompted objections over the “sexualization of women in sports.”

That complaint misses what the campaign is actually selling.

Sweeney never claims to be an athlete or presents herself as one, while the product itself is a betting platform aimed primarily at male customers wagering mostly on men’s sports.

The campaign therefore has almost nothing to do with promoting women’s sports.

Even so, female athletes criticized the advertisement, and the conversation expanded when the women of The View also weighed in on the controversy.

The backlash looks less persuasive because Novig’s advertising strategy follows one of the oldest ideas in marketing: “Sex sells.”

There are other ways to promote a prediction marketplace, but Novig chose this approach for its advertising dollars, and the attention shows why.

Sweeney is hardly the only celebrity whose appearance has been used to sell a product.

What makes this campaign especially effective is the intensity of the reaction, since every angry response gives Novig and Sweeney another wave of exposure without requiring another advertisement.

According to news sites cited in the source, Sweeney’s estimated net worth is $50 million.

The amount Novig paid her was not provided, but the campaign’s reach and the continuing conversation demonstrate the publicity attached to her involvement.

Sweeney is effectively turning hostility into a capitalist advantage.

Her critics keep reacting to her unapologetic use of sex appeal; their anger keeps amplifying her advertisements, and audiences who enjoy watching that outrage receive another spectacle.

The result is a cycle that benefits both Sweeney and the company paying her.

Novig gets attention, Sweeney strengthens her value as an advertising figure, and the critics who dislike the campaign continue helping it travel.

Sweeney is not retreating or capitulating under pressure.

She is trolling the left, capitalizing on its predictable response, and laughing all the way to the bank while the outrage machine does the promotional work for her.

Sydney Sweeney responds to the backlash over her semi-nude sports ad by posting examples of similar shoots featuring other stars over the years.

Funny how those never seemed to cause quite the same outrage.
