Yesterday, my VIP piece was on the emergence of the latest excuse for an inexcusable act – ‘the COVID made me do it.’
It all revolved around one of those silly ‘youths’ who already had a litany of baked-in excuses for his truly abysmal life choices – drug baby, supposedly abandoned, blah, blah, blah, etc. But the situation he’d created for himself – when he decided to pop into a New York City subway car at 3 a.m., set a piece of paper on fire, which in itself is obnoxious. But this was underneath a sleeping homeless man, specifically with the intent to light the homeless man on fire as well. Which it did.
And then pop out of the subway car, to close the doors on the now human torch inside, trapping that poor gentleman to burn alive until the next stop, when the doors reopened.
Well, you can see where the youth might need some extra firepower in the excuse department when it came time to plead at the sentencing hearing for the guilty plea he copped to.
The genius public defender came up with the de riguer ‘intellectually challenged’ and a sparkling new one:
…Brown also said Carrero struggled after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his education and described him as intellectually challenged.
THE COVID MADE HIM DO IT
How transparently full of bull**t could one excuse be? But the judge must have bought into at least some of it, because this deranged creature was only given six months more than the minimum required for causing all that hideous, torturous pain and now suffers permanent disfigurement and disability.
All I could wonder while writing was how soon we are going to see a plague of COVID-induced atrocities that are nothing but patently invented fairy tales, creating yet another victimhood class to relieve criminals of the culpability for their actions.
Little did I know I’d read about one that had been in progress even as the NYC case was wrapping up.
And it’s horrific.
On the night of August 23, 2021, a 38-year-old Miami mother began insisting to her family that, as COVID was going to kill them all, they needed to be baptized and she was going to do it.
She held her fifteen-month-old daughter underwater in the bathtub ‘baptizing her’ so long that the child became ‘unresponsive.’ In other words, she drowned the baby.
There was more carnage to come. I can’t even imagine.
The killing occurred on Aug. 23, 2021, at the home where Bland, her husband, Evan Bland, and their six children lived on the 3000 block of Northwest 99th Street. There, deputies discovered that Bland had drowned her daughter Emii in a bathtub, according to an arrest report.
Emii was found face down inside the bathtub, which was filled with bloody water, investigators say.
Bland’s husband tried to stop her, and a struggle ensued. Precious Bland asked their teenage daughter to get a knife, and the daughter told deputies that she “didn’t know why [Bland] wanted a knife, but she complied.” With that knife, Bland stabbed her husband in the head and neck — and, afterward, sliced her teenage daughter in the forearm as the teen tried to get Emii from Bland, the report says.
When deputies arrived, Evan Bland told them his wife “was upset, stating that Jesus Christ is coming and COVID is going to kill us all,” according to the report. Evan Bland said his wife insisted that everyone in the home needed to be baptized in the bathtub.
…After Emii’s killing, Bland stabbed and attempted to shoot herself but was unable to because of the extent of her injuries, Handfield said, after the voices in her head were giving her those commands. A week after she was arrested, she was still hearing voices, the attorney added.
The state’s case was that Bland’s actions were born out of a suspicion and jealousy-fueled rage that her husband was cheating on her.
Bland had been incarcerated until 2025, when a judge granted a $10,000 and allowed the woman out on monitored house arrest with an ankle bracelet.
She waived her right to a jury trial and on Tuesday, after a two-day bench trial in front of a Miami judge, Precious Bland heard herself declared ‘not guilty by means of temporary insanity.’
The judge bought the story that Bland had been COVID crazy. He couldn’t believe someone could be so angry over ‘a perceived infidelity’ that they would fly into a rage, murderous enough to kill a child.

…Tuesday’s decision is likely the first time a COVID-related psychosis defense has been successful in the country, attorneys said. De la O, who said he did not see a reason to commit Bland to a mental institution, scheduled a hearing for Thursday to flesh out the details of her release.
In Florida, a person found not guilty by reason of insanity may be placed on conditional release, which requires a treatment plan and periodic monitoring.
…“I knew that she was not responsible for that tragic incident …,”[defense attorney] Handfield told reporters. “The actions that she took [were] the result of a medical crisis brought on by COVID.”
What a load of made-up bovine excrement, said prosecutors.
…Prosecutor Elizabeth Utset, however, painted a different picture. She argued that Bland was in a “pressure-cooker situation” taking care of six children, two of whom were still in diapers, while homeschooling the four school-aged children. On top of that, Bland was doing all the housework, including renovations, on her own because her husband was working 12 to 14 hours a day.
Bland, Utset added, had no mental-health diagnosis that could explain her behavior, and she told investigators she had never heard voices until the day of the killing. Bland was obsessed with religion, but that did not amount to insanity, the prosecutor argued.
“It’s odd behavior, but it’s not psychosis,” Utset said. “The voices and the COVID psychosis is an embellished and fabricated story.”

Precious Bland was found not guilty by reason of insanity following a bench trial. Her defense successfully argued COVID-19 triggered a psychotic break, the first successful COVID insanity defense for murder in U.S. history.
She walked out of the courthouse a free woman and said: ” God is good”
For her part, Bland said she loves her children and can’t ‘wait to get her life back together.’
…”God is good. This doesn’t bring back my daughter,” Bland said. “I’m thankful. I love my children.”
Man.
