Senator John Kennedy sharply criticized what he described as the theft and misuse of public funds intended to help America’s most vulnerable citizens, saying such actions amount to stealing directly from both taxpayers and the poor.

Kennedy made the remarks while addressing broader concerns about fraud and misappropriation involving government assistance programs, emphasizing that Americans already contribute enormous sums each year to support those in need.

“I get a little upset when some people say, ‘Well, young American people are selfish,’” Kennedy said.

“We spend over a trillion dollars a year helping our neighbors who are less fortunate than us, mostly the poor in our country.”

Kennedy pushed back against the notion that Americans are unwilling to help one another, pointing to the scope of public assistance programs and the values behind them.

“I’ve said this before,” he said.

“If you’re hungry, we’ll feed you. If you’re homeless, we’ll house you. If you’re too poor to be sick, we’ll pay for your doctor.”

He contrasted the U.S. approach with other countries, arguing that Americans consistently step up to support fellow citizens rather than abandoning them.

“Other countries let their fellow citizens die in a ditch,” Kennedy said.

“We don’t do that in America. The American people have stepped up to the plate.”

Kennedy said that generosity is precisely why fraud and theft from these programs is particularly offensive. He argued that taking money intended for the poor represents a betrayal of both public trust and basic decency.

“So when people steal this money, this $1 trillion plus a year that we spend helping our neighbors, when people steal that money, it offends me,” Kennedy said.

He emphasized that such crimes harm two groups at once: taxpayers who fund the programs and the vulnerable individuals who rely on them.

“When they steal from the poor and they steal from the American taxpayer, it offends me equally,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy specifically referenced cases in Minnesota and elsewhere, accusing those involved of showing blatant disregard for the people they harmed.

“And the folks in Minnesota and and elsewhere who stole this money, who took a giant whiz, giant Great Dane whiz, down the leg of every taxpayer and poor person in America,” he said.

Kennedy concluded by calling for strict punishment for those responsible, arguing that serious consequences are necessary to deter future abuse and restore public confidence.

“Every one of them ought to go to jail,” he said.
