Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund will halt its financial backing for the LIV Golf tour after the 2026 season, creating uncertainty about the tour’s future. LIV Golf is currently searching for new investors while its players address what could happen next.

Greg Palkot reported that the decision has placed the league in serious jeopardy after it had depended on funding from the Saudi-backed Public Investment Fund to support large prize purses and major signing bonuses.

Bryson DeChambeau commented on the situation, stating that a return to the PGA Tour remains uncertain. He mentioned that he would turn his attention to his YouTube career if PGA membership were not possible.

DeChambeau also said that he believes LIV’s team model has proved to be successful and has created value for players who joined the tour.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

Another player, Thomas Pieters of the 4Aces Golf Club, said in an interview that he never plans to return to the PGA Tour. He expressed hope that LIV would be able to navigate the challenge created by the loss of funding.

A teammate of Pieters, Thomas Detry, shared similar feelings during his appearance on the “Beyond the Clubhouse” podcast. Detry, a PGA Tour winner, stated he is fully committed to LIV and believes the league’s format has been a huge success.

Detry said he shut down his social media accounts because he saw “lies” spreading rapidly about LIV Golf. He added that his experience on the tour changed a “misconception” he once had about the product.

“The biggest misconception is, the product is amazing,” Detry said. “I didn’t realize how good the product was. I think LIV’s an amazing product. We go all around the world, the tournaments are so good. Don’t take me wrong, there’s many things that can improve, but it’s still a start up. It’s only 4-years-old.”

Detry explained that contrary to what many people believe, the players enjoy playing LIV tournaments and do not want to return to the PGA Tour. “You see sometimes on social media that the players hate it and want to come back and that’s not the truth,” he said. “Players really love it out here and want to make this successful. So I think that’s what I got out of my first 6 weeks.”

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil has reportedly been trying to secure new investors following the end of PIF funding. A memo was sent to rally staff after reports spread regarding the financial uncertainty.

Detry reaffirmed that he has no plans to leave LIV. He said he wants players to show unity and remain supportive of the league’s direction. “I’m fully supportive of the whole thing,” he said. “I think the players who stand behind the whole thing as well. But now is the time for this whole league and every player out here to show cohesion and support for this whole thing.”

He added, “I think now is a moment where it’s not the right time to have individualistic people and ego-centric people going their own way. I think if everyone stands for each other and we all give this thing our full support, it’s going to go a long way. I’m fully supportive of the whole thing and believe in the future of LIV.”

Following the announcement about the PIF withdrawal, many speculated LIV Golf would fold. However, players have consistently voiced their preference for LIV’s structure compared to the PGA Tour’s schedule.

Players have highlighted benefits such as shorter schedules, fewer tournaments, and increased certainty before the funding announcement. LIV Golf Virginia is currently underway at Trump National near Washington, D.C., and no players have withdrawn from the event.

Despite speculation that players could rejoin the PGA Tour after 2026, comments from prominent members like Detry indicate that many remain committed to their current league.

Detry’s public endorsement of LIV’s direction underlines a sense of loyalty among certain players. His statements reflect the belief within parts of the roster that the tour can endure and expand beyond the current setback.

Even with concerns over its financial backing, LIV Golf continues to hold tournaments and retain player participation as questions rise regarding its long-term sustainability.

Many players, including Detry and Pieters of 4Aces, have supported the concept of unity among members and expressed the desire for the organization to move forward together.

The ongoing participation of players such as Thomas Detry, despite uncertainty surrounding new investment, demonstrates that several of LIV’s athletes plan to remain aligned with the tour’s mission and structure.
