Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz compared President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement operations to Nazi Germany during a press conference Sunday at the State Emergency Operations Center in Blaine, drawing immediate attention for invoking the historical example of Anne Frank.
Walz said he believes immigration enforcement actions under the Trump administration have created fear among illegal aliens and the children of illegal aliens in Minnesota, including concerns about attending school.
“Allow our children to go back to school. We have got children in Minnesota hiding in their houses, afraid to go outside,” Walz said.

“Many of us grew up reading that story of Anne Frank. Somebody’s going to write that children’s story about Minnesota.”
The remarks were not the first time Walz has compared federal immigration enforcement to Nazi Germany.

Last year, Walz referred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement under President Trump as a “modern-day Gestapo.”
During the same press conference Sunday, Walz urged Trump supporters to reconsider their positions and align with Democrats in opposing ICE operations in Minnesota.
He suggested that voters who previously supported the administration’s immigration efforts should now change their views based on recent enforcement activity in the state.
“You’re allowed to decide at any point that you are not with this anymore,” Walz said.
“If you voted for the administration, heck even if you thought Operation Metro Surge was a good idea and sounded like something we could do about it a month ago, you’re still allowed to look at what’s happening here in Minnesota and say this isn’t what I wanted or what I want.”
Walz encouraged those in attendance to publicly oppose immigration enforcement actions and set aside political differences.
The governor also said, “We all want secure borders and immigration enforcement that prioritizes criminals,” while continuing to criticize current federal operations in Minnesota.
Minnesota has enacted sanctuary-style policies during Walz’s tenure that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
Those policies have been cited by federal officials as obstacles to immigration enforcement operations within the state.
The Department of Homeland Security has repeatedly warned of rising violence directed at federal immigration officers, which the agency has attributed to what it describes as radical rhetoric from sanctuary politicians.
In a statement released earlier this month, DHS reported a sharp increase in assaults on ICE officers and incidents involving vehicles being used against agents.
“The hateful rhetoric and resistance against men and women who are simply trying to do their jobs must end,” the department said in a statement.
“Federal law enforcement officers are facing a more than 1,300% increase in assaults against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest criminals and lawbreakers.”
According to DHS, vehicular attacks against ICE officers have increased by more than 3,200% compared to previous years.
Federal officials have warned that such incidents pose a serious threat to officer safety and complicate ongoing enforcement operations.
Walz’s comments came amid heightened tensions in Minnesota surrounding federal immigration activity, with protests and public demonstrations occurring in response to recent enforcement actions.
The governor’s comparison and his call for political realignment drew national attention as debates over immigration enforcement and state cooperation with federal authorities continue.
The press conference concluded with Walz reiterating his opposition to current ICE operations in Minnesota while calling on residents to voice their concerns publicly and pressure elected officials to change course.
