Authorities in Sacramento are searching for a high school student suspected of fatally shooting another juvenile Friday afternoon on the campus of Natomas High School, prompting a large law enforcement response and the cancellation of planned school events, as reported by The New York Post.
Police said officers were dispatched shortly after 3:30 p.m. to reports of a shooting in an open area of the campus located on the 3200 block of Truxel Road.
When officers arrived, they found a student suffering from gunshot wounds.
The victim, who was pronounced dead, was identified as a student from another nearby school, according to Sacramento police spokesperson Anthony Gamble.

“We have a child that has been killed,” Gamble said. “It tugs at the heart of everybody that is out here.”
Emergency responders focused their efforts on areas near the campus quad and gymnasium as part of the initial response, according to reports from KCRA3.
Law enforcement quickly began searching for a suspect believed to be another student.

As part of the investigation, a SWAT team was deployed to a nearby 240-unit apartment complex, where officers were seen conducting door-to-door searches.
The complex is believed to be connected to the suspect, though police have not released detailed information about the individual being sought.
Family members of the alleged suspect gathered near the apartment complex and were seen urging the individual to surrender to authorities as officers maintained a presence in the area.
The Natomas Unified School District later confirmed that the victim had previously attended Natomas High School but was no longer enrolled at the time of the shooting.
District officials also notified families that the victim was specifically targeted, though no further details about a possible motive have been released.
“Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, and the entire Natomas High School community impacted by this devastating loss,” the district said in a statement.
In response to the incident, school officials canceled a Multicultural Festival that had been scheduled for Saturday. The district also announced that counseling services would be made available for students and staff affected by the tragedy.
Additionally, officials said there would be an increased safety presence at school campuses in the area as the investigation continues.
Authorities have not released the identity of the victim or the suspect, citing the ages of those involved.
The search for the suspect remained ongoing as of Friday evening, with law enforcement urging anyone with information to come forward.
The shooting has drawn attention to safety concerns on school campuses as investigators work to determine what led to the incident.
