WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Tom Homan told CBS that immigrants in the country illegally are deportable, regardless of whether they face an additional criminal charge.
  • CBS cited Rep. Maria Salazar’s statistic that 50% of ICE detainees lack an additional criminal charge.
  • Homan urged Republican critics to speak with ICE and educate themselves about the agency’s operations.
  • The Trump administration faces scrutiny over immigration arrests, enforcement tactics, and fatal shootings involving agents.

Border czar Tom Homan delivered a blunt answer when a CBS News reporter questioned him about immigration enforcement. His response cut through the familiar media framing and returned the conversation to one basic fact: People who are in the country illegally are subject to deportation.

The exchange began when CBS cited Republican Rep. Maria Salazar and a statistic about detainees held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. CBS told Homan: “Rep. Maria Salazar cited the stat that 50% of ICE detainees don’t have an additional criminal charge here.”

Homan immediately focused on their immigration status. He asked CBS: “Are they in the country illegally?”

CBS answered: “Yes.” Homan responded with the straightforward conclusion: “Then they are deportable.”

The reporter continued by noting the large number of people potentially covered by that standard. CBS said: “But so are millions of people…”

Homan was not moved by the scale of the problem or the reporter’s attempt to broaden the discussion. He replied: “Yea… if you’re in the country illegally you got a problem. You shouldn’t be here.”

That answer captures the argument supporters of stronger immigration enforcement have been making. The length of time someone has remained in the country illegally does not automatically erase the violation or create a free pass from enforcement.

Voters backed deportation rather than amnesty in the 2024 election. Its position is that the election produced a clear mandate and that media objections do not override the immigration enforcement policy voters supported.

Under that view, selectively excusing violations because someone has remained in the country for 10 years or longer makes little sense. The law cannot become optional simply because liberal activists, politicians, or reporters dislike the consequences of enforcing it.

Homan also dismissed much of the criticism directed at current enforcement efforts. He argued that it is “about hate on this administration and taking on Trump,” while pointing to ICE arrest and deportation figures under the Obama administration.

Homan served as a senior ICE official during the Obama administration. His point was that aggressive immigration enforcement did not begin with the current Trump administration, despite the outrage now surrounding its actions.

When pressed about growing criticism from Republicans, Homan urged lawmakers to speak directly with ICE before attacking the agency. He said: “I wish they’d sit down and talk to ICE. I wish they’d find out: What is ICE doing? How are they doing it? And educate themselves.”

The Trump administration has faced scrutiny over a rapid increase in arrests and the tactics used during immigration operations.

Earlier, U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti were fatally shot by immigration agents during a crackdown in the Minneapolis area earlier this year. Good’s family filed lawsuits against federal officials this week and named Homan as a defendant in one of them.

Good attempted to run over federal agents in Minneapolis before she was shot. People should not place officers in danger and then act surprised when law enforcement responds to the threat.

Those incidents have intensified the political fight over the administration’s immigration crackdown, but Homan’s answer remained fixed on legal status. If a person is in the country illegally, he argued, that person is deportable regardless of whether an additional criminal charge appears in the case.

The dividing line could hardly be clearer. Critics continue searching for exceptions, while Homan continues insisting that immigration laws mean what they say and that illegal presence carries consequences.
