President Donald Trump outlined his position on health care costs, sharply criticizing Obamacare and arguing that the law was designed to benefit insurance companies rather than the public.
Trump said the current structure has funneled significant sums to major insurers and contributed to rising premiums for Americans.
“We’re also working to bring down the cost of health care. Obamacare is a scam,” Trump said.
“Under Obamacare, trillions of dollars were given directly to health insurance companies. Their stocks are up 1,700% in a very short period of time. Would you say that’s good?”
Trump said the law’s structure favored companies that consistently support Democratic lawmakers.
“Obamacare’s primary purpose was to pay off insurance companies. You know, the insurance companies back the Democrats very heavily,” he said.
He described his preferred approach as one that removes insurers from the center of the funding structure and reallocates that money to Americans.

“I want to give billions of dollars directly to the people,” Trump said.
“I want to take all of the billions and billions, and actually trillions, but over a period of time, and I want to give all of that money we give to the big fat, rich insurance companies, I don’t want to give them nothing. I want to give nothing to the insurance companies.”
Trump said the existing system has contributed to higher premiums.
“They’re sucking our country dry with a scam by the Democrats. That was Obama, and I’ve always said it Obamacare, but now you see the numbers, because your premiums are going up on Obamacare and everything is forcing everything on,” he said.
He argued that individuals would secure better coverage at a lower cost if they could purchase plans directly with federal assistance.
“But we want the money go to directly to the people. We want you to go out and buy your own health insurance, and you’ll get much better health insurance at a much lower everybody knows this is the best way to go,” Trump said.
Trump concluded by challenging lawmakers who support Obamacare to reconsider its financial structure.
“But the Democrats, they’re bought and owned by the insurance companies. So let’s see how many of them have the guts to vote for this,” he said.
