Trump Takes Over Broadcast Booth For Sunday NFL Matchup

President Donald Trump took over the broadcast booth while attending a Sunday night football game between the Washington Commanders (formally Redskins) and the Detroit Lions.

Ahead of Veterans Day, Trump attended the Salute to Service game on Sunday. The president appeared in the Fox Sports broadcast booth where he did some play-by-play and recounted his football career. “I will say that your second string, your backup quarterback, is a good quarterback, and he’s had some very good games for you, and your first string quarterback has the potential, I think, to be a great quarterback, he’s got to stop the injuries somehow,” Trump said, as he made his NFL primetime play-by-play debut. “And let’s see, we have a very important, I think this is a very important couple of plays. Here we go.”

At the time Trump was doing play-by-play, the Commanders were in the Red Zone, with the ball inside the Lion’s ten yard line.

“This is a very big play, don’t you think?” the president continued. “I think they have to get a touchdown. Let’s put it differently. They have to get a touchdown.”

The Fox Sports hosts informed Trump that they had looked up his high school football stats, causing the president to recount his career.

“You go way back with the sport of football. You played at New York Military Academy,” Kenny Albert said to the president.

“How old were you when you started playing football, and what were some of the life lessons you took out of it?” Albert asked.

“We had a quarterback who didn’t have a very strong arm, I would say 10 yards was a long pass,” Trump said.

“We had a good time, and I loved it. I actually loved playing football. We had a good time with it,” he continued, as the Fox Sports broadcast displayed a team photo from Trump’s childhood and highlighted the president.

ESPN reported that there has been backchannel talk between the White House and the Washington Commanders to name their stadium after Trump. The president has previously expressed interest in getting the team to change their name back to the Redskins.

“That would surely be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told CNN in a statement about the discussions.
