President Donald Trump walked into the White House Correspondents Dinner on Friday night and did what the political press corps always fears most.

He made them the punchline in their own room.

The annual gathering of Washington media insiders, politicians, lobbyists, and camera hungry celebrities is usually treated like a sacred civic ritual by the same people who insist they are speaking truth to power.

Trump treated it more like an overdue roast of the people who have spent years treating him like the villain in their favorite cable news drama.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

After establishment reporters spent part of the evening congratulating one another for coverage aimed squarely at Trump, the president took the stage and immediately turned the spotlight back on them.

The mood shifted fast, because the guest of honor was not there to flatter the room.

“This place is the really largest group of Trump derangement syndrome people ever put together at one time, I suspect,” the president said at one point.

That line landed because it hit the obvious nerve.

For years, much of the corporate press has behaved less like a neutral watchdog and more like a therapy circle with press credentials.

Trump did not limit himself to the media, either.

He brought Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr into the act with a joke about the dinner menu that had the room laughing and wincing at the same time.

“I hope everyone finally got to enjoy their entire, very delicious beef tenderloin; It’s very special beef. And I want you all to know that Bobby Kennedy, who is right here, personally ran over the cow in his car and he cut it up, and he brought it here for you to eat tonight, so it’s very fresh,” Trump said.

Then he kept going, pulling Kennedy’s wife, Cheryl Hines, into the bit as well.

“And Bobby also suggested an appetizer featuring his favorite cut of male raccoon roadkill, but we drew the line at that, Cheryl,” Trump added, roping Kennedy’s wife, Cheryl Hines, into the joke.

The president also took aim at CNN personalities Anderson Cooper and Kaitlan Collins, two figures who have become fixtures in the media ecosystem that feeds on Trump coverage while pretending to be above it.

Trump’s dig at Cooper was wrapped in a strange sort of backhanded nostalgia.

“I like Anderson actually because he’s covered me well for many years, then he went bad as soon as I went for politics… I did so many interviews with him, and he was great. But you know he’s got a little different persuasion than me, in many ways actually,” he said of Cooper.

Collins got a sharper jab, with Trump comparing her to transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in a crack tied to the Bud Light controversy. For a press corps that lectures America daily about sensitivity while dishing out sanctimony by the truckload, it was exactly the kind of joke designed to make the room squirm.

“I thought Kaitlan had really made it big with a major new sponsorship, but then I informed her that it wasn’t her on the Bud Light can, it was Dylan Mulvaney,” he said.

The dinner once again showed the strange relationship between Trump and the media class.

They scold him, mock him, obsess over him, profit from him, and then act shocked when he returns fire in person.

Trump closed by teasing the crowd with a mock announcement about running again, putting on a Trump 2028 hat as he spoke.

The move was classic Trump theater, a perfectly timed reminder that no matter how many panels the pundits host, he still knows how to seize the room.

“I’m pleased to announce my intention to, and this is somewhat of a scoop, my intention to run for a fourth term as president of the United States,” he said while putting on a Trump 2028 hat.

WATCH:

The establishment press wanted a night of applause, awards, and insider backslapping.

Instead, it got a president willing to say out loud what millions of grassroots conservatives have been saying for years.

The press can call it mean, small, or not funny if it wants.

But judging by how loudly Trump’s jokes keep echoing through Washington, the people who claim not to care are still listening very closely.
