Two Mexican nationals in the United States on nonimmigrant visas were arrested late last month during a traffic stop in Cañon City, Colorado, after authorities discovered they were transporting 180,000 rounds of ammunition, federal prosecutors announced on Wednesday.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado confirmed that 41-year-old Caesar Ramon Martinez Solis and 24-year-old Humberto Ivan Amador Gavira, both citizens of Mexico, were taken into custody on March 26.

The arrest followed a traffic stop conducted by two detectives with the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, who observed a white Chevrolet van traveling without dimming its headlights—a violation of Colorado law.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Cañon City Daily Record, the van also failed to use a turn signal when pulling into a gas station and had a non-functioning license plate light.

During the stop, deputies reportedly discovered around 150 boxes of .308-caliber ammunition and about 30 boxes of 7.62mm ammunition inside the van.

Each box was labeled to contain 1,000 rounds, bringing the total to approximately 180,000 rounds.

After being taken into custody, Martinez Solis agreed to speak with special agents from the Department of Homeland Security and waived his right to an attorney, according to the affidavit.

Martinez Solis told investigators that he and Amador Gavira, whom he identified as his brother-in-law, had traveled from Mexico to Denver the day before the arrest to purchase a vehicle.

From there, they planned to drive to Salt Lake City, Utah, to view another vehicle he was interested in buying.

While in Salt Lake City, the pair visited a firearms and ammunition store, where Amador Gavira allegedly purchased the ammunition.

Martinez Solis told authorities he did not know the intended use for the ammunition but believed it was meant to be delivered to Pueblo, Colorado, which is roughly 113 miles south of Denver.

He added that the specific destination was saved on Amador Gavira’s phone.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the final destination or purpose of the ammunition.

Both men were formally charged with Unlawful Possession of Ammunition by an Alien Admitted Under a Nonimmigrant Visa.

The case is being investigated jointly by the Denver Field Office of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

According to officials, the case falls under Operation Take Back America, a federal law enforcement initiative aimed at countering illegal immigration and dismantling cartel and transnational criminal networks operating within the United States.
