A sweeping investigation by Indian law enforcement has unveiled an industrial scale racket producing fake college degrees, many of which reportedly ended up being used to secure coveted H1B visas for employment in the United States.

Authorities say this sprawling network, touching at least 28 universities, sold counterfeit credentials across medicine, nursing, and engineering fields, calling into question the integrity of thousands of visa applications.

Indian officials say they have seized roughly 100,000 bogus certificates so far, with one university suspected of issuing more than 36,000 fraudulent documents by itself.

The cost was shockingly low for such a high stakes deception.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

For about 1,400 dollars, buyers could purchase a fake degree, essentially buying a ticket to an American job with an inflated salary and visa status to match.

The implications stretch far beyond India. The H1B visa system, established for “specialty occupations,” requires at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent as a cornerstone of eligibility.

Under U.S. immigration law, this is not negotiable.

A fake degree does not just embellish a resume, it defrauds the system itself, voiding both the employer’s certification and the government’s approval.

Yet the scope of this scheme shows how deeply this deceit can spread in a globalized labor market that often relies on paper evidence for technical skill.

Critics have long claimed that H1B abuse, particularly from India, has been rampant for years.

However, this latest discovery provides undeniable proof. Indian investigators say the counterfeit operations were professionally organized, complete with stolen seals, fabricated transcripts, and fake accreditation stamps.

For years, students and “applicants” could order fake credentials online as easily as buying a plane ticket.

U.S. companies depending on the H1B pipeline are watching nervously.

The revelation threatens to pour fuel on an already heated policy debate in Washington, where lawmakers have introduced new bills aimed at tightening verification of foreign degrees and imposing more scrutiny on applicants from high risk regions.

For conservatives who have long questioned the integrity of this program, the numbers confirm what they have warned about all along.

The Biden administration, which has championed expanded visa access under the guise of “global talent inclusion,” will find it harder to dismiss this scandal.

Reports have already shown that more than 80 percent of H1B hires in recent years have gone to junior or entry level positions, contradicting the program’s supposed mission to import only highly skilled workers for specialized roles.

When the data points to such entry level domination, it is clear that the mission has been derailed.

WATCH:

Former officials have also weighed in.

A widely circulated claim that nearly 90 percent of Indian H1B applications involved some kind of fraud dates back to an American consular officer’s report on cases from 2005 to 2007.

That may be old data, but this new discovery in India puts fresh evidence behind that long standing suspicion.

The message is unmistakable, the loopholes remain wide open and exploitation is alive and well.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has taken notice, reportedly examining whether fake foreign credentials were used by applicants for state level licensing or employment.

If his office finds any overlap, prosecutions could follow.

Such action would make Texas one of the first states to take a direct stand against H1B credential abuse on American soil.

The scam is already showing ripple effects in other sectors. Bloomberg reported that the crackdown on these visa schemes is cooling housing markets in technology heavy areas of Texas.

Many would be buyers are H1B holders or applicants, and rising visa uncertainty has caused home purchases to freeze.

It is another reminder that federal immigration policy has deep local impact and that fraud abroad can shake communities thousands of miles away.

Inside India, the universities at the center of this operation are being dismantled, but officials admit that many corrupt institutions remain under the radar.

The market was too profitable and too easy.

Fake degrees allowed middlemen to make enormous profits while customers gained access to better jobs and immigration pathways.

It is a grim example of how fake paperwork can distort legitimate economic mobility across borders.

For U.S. taxpayers, the scandal raises hard questions about the enforcement capacity of both immigration and labor agencies.

How many existing H1B holders have fake or unverifiable degrees?

How many jobs were displaced by workers who should never have received visas in the first place?

Conservative lawmakers are demanding that USCIS conduct a retroactive audit to verify credentials among current visa holders before similar abuses go even further.

The convergence of events has laid bare the weakness in the H1B program structure.

In a single week, a counterfeit credential scandal in India, reforms debated in Congress, and a softening housing market in Texas have all collided.

Together they expose a program that was intended for the best and brightest but too often rewards deception. For a system reliant on trust and verification, that trust is looking badly misplaced.
