A University of Georgia senior survived a terrifying plunge from an eighth-floor apartment window while dancing on a couch, according to her father and investigators.

The 21-year-old student is now recovering in intensive care after the Saturday evening fall in Athens, Georgia, as reported by The New York Post.

Kristin Sargent fell shortly after 7:30 p.m. at The Rambler building on West Broad Street.

According to a police report obtained by The Post, she landed on the pool deck in a courtyard located on the building’s second floor.

Her father, Richard Sargent, told Channel 2 Action News that his daughter understood just how fortunate she was.

“She was talking to one of her friends and saying, ‘Hey, I’m alive. I can’t believe it’,” he said.

Richard Sargent described his daughter as “pretty badly beaten up” while saying the family was grateful she had survived. “She’s a good fighter, and so she’s going to be OK,” he said.

The fall reportedly left Kristin Sargent with several broken bones.

Her father did not detail what caused the accident, but he noted that it happened after the Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 41 to 13 on Saturday.

“University of Georgia just won a football game,” Richard Sargent said. “I bet there was a lot of kids here who are 21 years old who were super happy.”

Sargent, a senior studying finance and marketing at UGA, was described as 5’7 and weighing 115 lbs. Investigators said she had been dancing on a couch near an open window before falling through the screen.

Responding officer Erik Ellison wrote that police were dispatched to the apartment building at approximately 7:37 p.m. Bystanders at the complex told officers what they had seen before Sargent fell.

“I arrived and spoke with bystanders who advised that the female victim had been dancing on a couch or air mattress which was near an open window and had apparently fallen through the screen and onto the ground below,” Ellison wrote.

When Ellison arrived, Sargent was on the ground near the pool in the second-floor courtyard. Evidence at the scene suggested she had struck a metal bench during the plunge.

“It appeared from the scene that the victim had struck a metal bench as she fell, as the cushion on the bench had some blood on it, and the armrest of the bench had broken off,” Ellison wrote.

Witnesses reportedly said a lounge chair might also have broken her fall before she reached the ground.

Ellison said investigators interviewed Sargent and other witnesses at the hospital, while forensic personnel processed the scene.

The information gathered by authorities suggested that the fall was an accident, according to the report.

The investigation remained ongoing when the report was written, and Ellison stated, “At this time it appears that the victim will survive.”

The building later sent residents a message stating that windows throughout the complex have safety limiters.

Management warned residents not to “tamper with, remove or disengage” those devices, according to Channel 2.

Authorities had not said whether the window involved in Sargent’s fall had a safety limiter engaged or whether such a device played any role.

Management at The Rambler said it was cooperating with investigators as they reviewed the circumstances.

Sargent’s family rushed from Virginia after receiving a call informing them about the fall. Richard Sargent said somebody told the family, “Oh my God, Kristin’s had a tough fall.”

Friends and fellow students filled a large poster inside the building with dozens of messages for Sargent. The display reflected an outpouring of support as she continued recovering in intensive care.
