CCTV footage showing an Australian Army nurse using his Jiu-Jitsu training to restrain a violent patient has gone viral after the nurse released the video to raise awareness about workplace violence faced by healthcare workers.

The incident occurred in 2024 at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Queensland, Australia. Registered nurse Daniel Nelson posted the surveillance footage this week, saying he wanted to highlight the dangers medical staff face when dealing with aggressive patients in emergency departments.

According to Nelson, the confrontation began after a patient became disruptive inside the hospital’s emergency department.

“The patient had been verbally abusing staff, spitting on the floor, and behaving aggressively,” Nelson said.

After hospital staff instructed the man to leave, Nelson escorted him outside the emergency department.

“After being asked to leave, I escorted him outside,” Nelson said.

The situation escalated once they reached the exterior of the hospital. According to Nelson, the patient suddenly turned violent in an apparent attempt to force his way back inside.

“Somewhere along the way, he decided assaulting the nurse was a good idea,” Nelson said.

CCTV footage shows the patient rushing toward the entrance while throwing multiple punches at Nelson. The nurse immediately responded by grabbing the man, taking him to the ground with a throw, and securing him in a headlock to prevent the confrontation from continuing.

Nelson maintained control of the patient until hospital security officers arrived and took over.

The nurse later explained that he decided to make the footage public because he believes the incident demonstrates the risks healthcare workers face every day, particularly those who may not have the physical size or training to defend themselves.

“What if he’d picked a nurse half my size? A new graduate? A student? Someone who simply couldn’t defend themselves?” Nelson said.

According to an Australian outlet, Nelson serves as a registered nurse with the Australian Army in addition to his work in the healthcare system.

The video quickly attracted widespread attention after being posted online, surpassing 1.5 million views in less than 24 hours as viewers reacted to the confrontation and Nelson’s decision to speak publicly about violence against medical staff.

The footage captures only a brief portion of the incident, showing the patient attempting to rush past Nelson before throwing several punches. Nelson then uses his grappling skills to bring the man to the ground, where he restrains him without striking him as security personnel respond.

The case later proceeded through Australia’s legal system.

The patient pleaded guilty to one count of common assault. The court imposed a $450 fine following the guilty plea.

Nelson said his goal in releasing the video was not to revisit the incident itself but to encourage greater attention to the safety challenges nurses and other healthcare workers encounter while caring for patients.

Violence against medical personnel has become an increasing concern for hospitals in many countries, particularly in emergency departments where staff frequently interact with intoxicated, combative, or otherwise aggressive individuals.

Nelson said the incident raises broader questions about protecting frontline healthcare workers who may find themselves confronting dangerous situations without the ability to physically defend themselves.

By sharing the footage, Nelson said he hopes more attention will be given to the risks faced by nurses on the job and to the importance of ensuring hospital employees have the resources and protection needed when dealing with violent patients.

The video continues to circulate online following its release, drawing millions of views and renewed discussion about workplace safety in healthcare settings.
