Vance Kalavi spoke out over what he described as a failure by school officials to notify parents after his 14-year-old son participated in a protest during school hours on February 2, 2026, in White Center, Washington.

Kalavi addressed school officials and community members, stating that his concerns had shifted from political disagreement to personal impact.

“It used to be political. Now it’s personal. Our children are involved,” Kalavi said.

“I am sick and tired of watching politicians and school boards, people from the city telling children they can go out and get, excuse my language, go out and get in the face of law enforcement.”

Kalavi identified himself and described the moment he learned his son was not at school.

“Good evening. My name is Vance Kalavi, and on the afternoon the February 2, 2026 my 14 year old child called me. He was not at school, he was not sick. He was in the middle of White Center, Washington. The middle of a protest was organized for his middle school. Okay? My stomach dropped when he called me.”

He referenced a previous incident that occurred days earlier.

“You guys have noticed that January 30, 2026, two children were killed, just lost in the school on Rainier that was having a walk out that day.”

Kalavi cited state law, including RCW 28A.600.035, and Initiative 2081, known as the Parental Bill of Rights, arguing that he had a legal right to know where his child was during school hours.

“RCW 28A.600.035, by allowing them to leave. And under initiative 2081 the parental Bill of Rights, I have the right to know where my child goes. That was taken from me. I was not given notice. I was not given an email. I was not given a call.”

He accused school officials of exposing his son to danger and cited another statute, RCW 9A.42.035.

“You exposed me to real danger. That’s neglected. That’s endangerment. RCW 9A.42.035, couple of negligence by not being aware of the substantial risk. You call it policy. I call it abandonment.”

Kalavi announced that he had filed a lawsuit and vowed to pursue accountability.

“I filed a lawsuit before Paul Johnson. Want to make sense something perfectly clear, someone’s going to be held accountable for all of you will remember it, because, for some reason, to lose our case, we’ll make a case law out of this protect parents rights to know where our kids are all at all times.”

He continued, “It’s ridiculous. It’s criminal negligence.”

Kalavi also referenced personnel consequences tied to protest participation.

“And yes, a principal was fired for course, each students participate in protesting, just so you know,” he said.

He concluded by stating his intention to continue addressing the issue publicly.

“I had an hour worth of yelling to do, but today I’m going to narrow it down to two minutes because you didn’t give me enough time, but I will be here at every school board meeting to continue what I had to say today. I am not finished. I yield my time.”
