Rep. Tim Burchett criticized Democratic lawmakers over complaints about spending on meals for U.S. troops, contrasting those criticisms with what he described as broader spending decisions and political priorities in Washington.

Burchett made the remarks while reflecting on his father’s experience serving in the U.S. military during World War II and discussing the conditions troops faced at the time.

“Hey everybody. Tim Burchett, I woke up this morning thinking about my dad when he said that they hit the beach at Peleliu in the Second World War,” Burchett said.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

He described how his father served in a combat engineering unit and recalled a meal provided to troops during that period.

“He was in the Corps Combat Engineer, and they were they fed them a steak dinner, and how good it was and how thankful he was to get it because on when they were in the in the mess like these guys are, are in most of the time they eat what’s called MREs,” Burchett said.

Burchett contrasted modern military rations with those used during earlier conflicts.

“But back then, they ate K rations, and daddy’s K rations were dated, and they were left over from World War One, if you can believe that,” he said.

The Tennessee congressman then criticized Democrats for raising concerns about spending on meals such as steak and lobster for service members.

“But it’s very disingenuous for these Democrat congressmen and senators to point out how much money we’re spending on these, these steak and lobster meals, when, you know, every dad go night, they’re going out with some fat cat lobbyist, and he or she’s feeding them, guess what, steak and lobster,” Burchett said.

He argued that such meals often involve costs that ultimately affect taxpayers.

“And somebody’s paying for that, and it’s going to end up being you and me eventually,” he said.

Burchett also referenced spending decisions during the administration of former President Joe Biden, raising concerns about federal funding for programs outside of military priorities.

“So and then where were they? During the Biden administration, we were spending millions of dollars on drag shows for children overseas, and transgender comic books and things like that, millions and millions of dollars,” Burchett said.

He also mentioned financial transfers involving Afghanistan following the U.S. withdrawal.

“And we’re still sending $40 million a week to the to the Taliban, which was, guess what started under the Biden administration,” Burchett said.

Burchett concluded by accusing Democratic lawmakers of directing media focus away from issues he believes deserve more scrutiny.

“So I can’t believe it. Really, it seems that they are directing the media where to look, and they’re not paying attention to the big picture on purpose, and they’re good at it,” he said.

He ended his remarks by thanking voters and asking for support.

“So anyway, thank you all for sending me here, and please pray for our country.”
