A dangerous dirt bike pursuit tore through Los Angeles on Wednesday evening, sending pedestrians scrambling as a rider swerved through traffic, raced across parks, and attempted an improvised fuel stop while police followed close behind, as reported by ABC 7.

The chase began shortly before 5:40 p.m. and continued for more than an hour through the Watts area and South Los Angeles. Police later confirmed that the dirt bike had been reported stolen.

AIR7 located the fleeing rider around 6:10 p.m. as he sped along surface streets and maneuvered through congested neighborhoods.

Officers initially believed the suspect might have been armed, though authorities later said no gun was recovered.

The rider was not wearing a helmet as he weaved through narrow alleyways and squeezed between vehicles.

His erratic movements created a serious danger for motorists, pedestrians, and officers attempting to bring the pursuit under control.

At one point, the suspect appeared to use a cellphone while continuing to flee police.

Managing a phone while operating a stolen dirt bike during a police chase apparently seemed like a perfectly reasonable addition to the evening’s bad decisions.

The rider then pulled into a gas station and attempted to refuel the motorcycle. He abruptly sped away before completing the stop, dragging the gas pump hose along with the bike as the pursuit continued.

That chaotic gas station departure did not solve the suspect’s fuel problem for long. Police cruisers remained close behind while the rider continued cutting through traffic and searching for unconventional escape routes.

The pursuit soon moved away from regular streets as the rider took the dirt bike off road and raced through a park.

Nearby pedestrians were forced to run for safety while the suspect accelerated across areas never intended to serve as a criminal express lane.

At Athens Park, the rider stopped beside a jug of gasoline that had apparently been left at the location.

Authorities did not immediately know who placed the container there or whether it had any connection to the suspect.

With a police cruiser approaching, the rider grabbed the jug and tried to pour gasoline into the dirt bike.

Some fuel appeared to reach the tank before the suspect abandoned the rushed refueling effort and sped away once again.

The bizarre scene briefly resembled a roadside pit stop, except this one unfolded inside a public park with police closing in.

The rider showed little concern for the people nearby as he blasted away and resumed his dangerous escape attempt.

AIR7 helicopter reporter Chris Cristi reported another unusual twist during the pursuit.

According to Cristi, the suspect was at one point speaking by phone with an AIR7 photographer while actively fleeing from law enforcement.

Several police units followed the dirt bike as the chase moved through South Los Angeles neighborhoods.

Officers maintained pressure while attempting to avoid a collision that could have injured residents or other drivers caught in the suspect’s path.

The pursuit finally ended after the rider reportedly fell from the dirt bike.

Rather than surrender immediately, the suspect attempted to hide inside a recycling trash can, bringing the long and reckless chase to an appropriately ridiculous conclusion.

Police surrounded the area and took the suspect into custody at gunpoint without any reported further escape attempt. His identity and the specific charges he could face were not immediately released by authorities.

No firearm was found despite the earlier warning that the rider might have been armed. The stolen dirt bike was recovered, and officers were left to sort through a trail of dangerous driving, damaged property, frightened pedestrians, and one very poor choice of hiding place.
