Authorities have identified the suspect in the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, as investigators continue to examine the events surrounding the incident and the suspect’s background.

The shooting took place Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, where the annual dinner was being held.

The venue has hosted the event for years and is also known as the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

According to officials, Allen was a guest at the hotel and was able to move through parts of the building before reaching a security checkpoint near the ballroom.

Reports indicate that guests were screened with metal detectors closer to the event space rather than upon entering the hotel itself.

Law enforcement officials said Allen assembled a firearm inside the hotel before moving toward the secured area.

He then rushed past security and exchanged gunfire with Secret Service personnel.

During the exchange, one agent was struck in a bulletproof vest.

Authorities said the vest prevented serious injury.

Allen was taken into custody at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

President Donald Trump later released security camera footage showing the suspect moving past a screening area.

The video captured Allen running in the direction of the event space before being confronted by law enforcement.

Investigators executed search warrants at Allen’s residence in California following the incident.

According to officials, they recovered a manifesto indicating that he intended to target members of the Trump administration.

Authorities are reviewing the document as part of the ongoing investigation.

Officials also said Allen had posted statements on social media expressing opposition to President Trump and references to religious topics.

At least one family member had contacted authorities prior to the shooting, according to reports, though further details about that communication have not been released.

Allen’s background includes work as a mechanical engineer and video game developer.

He also worked part time as a teacher, according to records reviewed by investigators.

The incident is being examined as part of a broader pattern of threats against the president.

Officials have not released a motive and said the investigation remains active.

In the aftermath of the shooting, reactions emerged from various individuals and organizations.

One post from Minocqua Brewing Company in Wisconsin drew attention after it referenced the incident. The post read:

“Well, we almost got #freebeerday. Either a brother or sister in the Resistance needs to work on their marksmanship or he faked another assassination to get a positive news cycle. We’ll never know. Regardless, we stand at the ready to pour free beer the day it happens.”

A Wisconsin brewing company, Minocqua Brewing Co., is now facing widespread calls to have its licenses revoked after they posted a message celebrating the attempted assassination of President Trump before quickly deleting it.

The brewery is owned by Kirk Bangstad, who previously ran for state office as a Democrat.

Public records show that Bangstad pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in a prior case.

He has also faced legal matters involving defamation, including a 2024 lawsuit that resulted in a settlement of $580,000.

Bangstad operates a political action committee associated with the business.

Officials have not indicated any connection between the suspect and the brewery or its owner.

Authorities continue to review security procedures at the Washington Hilton and are assessing how the suspect was able to approach the event area with weapons.

Federal and local law enforcement agencies are coordinating the investigation as they gather additional information about Allen’s actions before and during the incident.
