WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Neal McDonough has never watched “Yellowstone,” despite playing Malcolm Beck in six Season 2 episodes.
  • The method actor says revisiting performances can feel traumatic and painful because he remembers his exact thoughts from each scene.
  • McDonough even leaves his own movie premieres after walking the red carpet with his wife, Ruvé.
  • He also recalled career, financial and alcohol struggles after his claimed 2010 firing from ABC’s “Scoundrels.”

Neal McDonough may be known for playing one of the most ruthless villains in the “Yellowstone” universe, but he has never watched the hit series himself, as reported by Page Six.

The actor, 60, portrayed businessman Malcolm Beck in six episodes during Season 2.

McDonough revealed his viewing habits during an appearance on the “Arroyo Grande” podcast.

“I’ve never seen it. You know, I don’t watch any of my stuff,” he said.

His avoidance is not limited to “Yellowstone.”

McDonough explained that watching any of his past work can become an intensely emotional experience because he remembers exactly what was happening in his mind during a performance.

“As a method actor, I can tell you if I look at a frame – that’s why I don’t watch any of my stuff. If I look at a frame of a show from 20 years ago, I know exactly the thought I was thinking,” he shared.

McDonough said those memories extend far beyond his lines or movements in a scene.

He can recall the song he was thinking about and where he was going at the time.

“I know the song I was thinking about. I know where I was going. So going back to me sometimes can be really kind of traumatic and painful,” he said.

That policy even applies when McDonough attends premieres for his own films.

While he will appear on the red carpet with his wife, Ruvé, he does not necessarily stay to watch the finished movie.

“I’ll go to premieres of our films, and I’ll do the red carpet. [His wife] Ruvé and I will walk in, out the exit, grab a nice dinner someplace, go to the party after. ‘How’d you like the movie?’ ‘It was great. It was awesome. I loved it.’ I just don’t like to watch myself,” he said.

McDonough also said he does not need to review a scene to determine whether he performed well. He trusts the ability that has allowed him to continue finding acting work.

“I was there on the day,” he said. “I know I did a great job because God gave me a talent. I’m terrible at pounding nails. I’m not very good at telling jokes.”

McDonough credited his wife with recognizing where his strength lies.

“But as Ruvé said, ‘Man, you can act.’ And so I don’t need to look to see if it was good or not. They keep on hiring me, right? If they keep on hiring, I must be doing something right.”

His decision to avoid watching “Yellowstone” follows a painful period in his life when he questioned whether his Hollywood career had ended.

McDonough has claimed he was fired from ABC’s “Scoundrels” in 2010 after refusing to perform intimate scenes with a female fellow actor.

He said the decision damaged his career and left him struggling both financially and personally.

Speaking to Fox News Digital in May, McDonough described his mindset during that period by saying, “What time is the bar open? That was generally my thought process back then.”

McDonough said people would not hire him because they viewed his refusal through the lens of his religious beliefs.

He explained that his position came from how deeply he loves his wife and said others could not understand it.

Alcohol also became a serious problem during that chapter. McDonough said he had always been a drinker, but the situation grew worse after he believed Hollywood had blackballed him.

“I lost the house, lost the cars, lost everything,” he said.

McDonough recalled Ruvé making him choose between their family and the bottle, and he said he never looked back after that ultimatum.

McDonough and Ruvé have been married for nearly 23 years and share five children.

They have also produced projects together, including “Boon,” “The Warrant: Breaker’s Law,” “Homestead” and “The Last Rodeo.”

The couple met while McDonough was filming “Band of Brothers” in 2000.

They married on Dec. 1, 2003, beginning the personal and professional partnership that McDonough continues to credit throughout his career.
