Political commentator Batya Ungar-Sargon said President Donald Trump’s military strikes on Iran have produced significant strategic results both militarily and geopolitically, arguing the operation has advanced U.S. security interests while weakening China’s position in global energy markets.

Ungar-Sargon discussed the developments during commentary analyzing the early outcomes of the operation and the broader international consequences.

“President Trump’s strikes on Iran have been wildly successful,” Ungar-Sargon said.

She pointed to rapid military developments during the early phase of the campaign, saying U.S. and allied forces quickly established control of Iranian airspace.

“In just the first eight days, we managed to achieve complete air superiority over Iran, and we are taking out their missile launchers one by one with the help of the Israelis,” Ungar-Sargon said.

According to Ungar-Sargon, the publicly stated goal of the operation has been to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and to reduce the threat posed by Iranian missile capabilities.

“The stated goal of the operation, repeated frequently by the president, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, is protecting us, our kids, and our grandkids, from a nuclear Iran,” she said.

Ungar-Sargon argued that the operation also fits into a broader strategy that connects foreign policy with economic and geopolitical priorities.

“But if we’ve learned anything about this president, it’s how deeply intertwined his domestic agenda is with his foreign policy, and that is true of the strikes in Iran as well,” she said.

She said the campaign has implications for global power competition, particularly with China.

“Trump is restoring America as the world’s only superpower, kneecapping China with its aspirations to replace us,” Ungar-Sargon said.

Ungar-Sargon also said the strikes have reinforced the role of the U.S. dollar in global energy markets.

“He’s bringing back the absolute dominance of the petro dollar, destroying the dreams of our adversaries,” she said.

She acknowledged that energy prices have risen in the short term but argued the administration had already taken steps to protect the U.S. economy from major disruptions.

“And while gas prices are up right now, prior to the military attack on Iran, Trump created a protective economic shield around the western hemisphere to mitigate major fallout,” Ungar-Sargon said.

“In other words, the war in Iran is about protecting American lives, but it’s also very much about protecting American interests,” she said.

Ungar-Sargon said the developments challenge long-standing claims that the United States has been losing global influence.

“For decades, it was accepted wisdom that the United States was in decline, that we’re now in a multi polar world where America is no longer the reigning superpower,” she said.

She pointed to the BRICS alliance—Brazil, Russia, India and China—as an example of countries attempting to reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar in global trade.

“Brazil, Russia, India and China banded together to form BRICS and threatened to start trading energy in a currency other than the dollar, partnering with Iran, which was evading American sanctions,” Ungar-Sargon said.

She argued that recent events have weakened those efforts.

“But over the last three months, the President just knocked the winds right out of the sails of that whole angry scene,” she said.

Ungar-Sargon rejected comparisons between the Iran operation and previous U.S. conflicts in the Middle East.

“All week, Democrats have been bemoaning this as another Iraq. But actually it’s not,” she said.

She instead compared the strategy to earlier actions involving Venezuela.

“It’s much closer to Trump’s operation in Venezuela, an oil rich country, part of a network belligerent to our lives and our interests that was financing terrorism and undermining the United States across the globe,” Ungar-Sargon said.

She said China had previously benefited from purchasing Venezuelan oil at reduced prices.

“China, our chief adversary was buying up Venezuelan oil for cheap, much of it in exchange for billions of dollars in Chinese loans,” she said.

According to Ungar-Sargon, political changes in Venezuela shifted the energy market.

“With the removal of Maduro, Trump turned Venezuela into an America friendly country whose oil is being traded on the free market, where it has contributed to lowering the cost of energy for average Americans, while weaking China’s hand,” she said.

Ungar-Sargon said that once that shift occurred, the administration turned its focus toward Iran.

“And with that economic and geopolitical protection in place, Trump moved on to Iran, another supplier of cheap oil to China,” she said.

She argued that the strikes have disrupted China’s access to Iranian oil supplies.

“Well, until this week, thanks to President Trump’s maneuvering over the last few months, we now control every oil choke point on the globe,” Ungar-Sargon said.

Ungar-Sargon said Russia has not taken visible steps to support Iran during the conflict.

“Russia is too scared to lift a finger to help Iran, at least overtly,” she said.

She also said China’s alliances with Iran and Russia have not produced meaningful support during the conflict.

“The petro dollar is back, while China’s alliance with Iran and Russia has proven worth less than the paper it was written on,” Ungar-Sargon said.

Ungar-Sargon said Iran had played an important role in China’s geopolitical messaging.

“Xi Jinping has long insisted that the East is rising and the West is declining,” she said.

She argued the military operation undermined that narrative.

“A belligerent Iran was crucial to that claim, proof of the limits of American power,” Ungar-Sargon said.

“Trump destroyed that illusion in just one week as American and Israeli bombs have decimated Iran’s military capabilities, much of them, much of it supplied to them by China,” she said.

Ungar-Sargon said China has not provided direct support to Iran beyond diplomatic statements.

“China has offered nothing but thoughts and prayers,” she said.

She also described the economic importance of Iranian oil to China.

“At least explicitly, Iran was crucial to China economically, too, almost all of Iran’s exported oil went to China last year,” Ungar-Sargon said.

According to Ungar-Sargon, the loss of those supplies could significantly affect China’s energy access.

“The President’s strike on Iran isolated China from up to 20% of its oil supply, creating a massive energy crunch and basically Neutralizing the Threat that China would take Taiwan,” she said.

She added that China has already begun adjusting domestic energy policy in response.

“China has now instructed its refiners not to export any diesel or gas,” Ungar-Sargon said.

She also noted that China lowered its economic growth target for the coming year.

“And on Thursday, china set its growth target for 2026 below 5% for the first time in 30 years,” she said.

Ungar-Sargon said China’s leadership is now facing new pressure.

“Xi Jinping is scrambling Now,” she said.

She concluded by saying President Trump has not emphasized the geopolitical implications publicly, suggesting the administration may be preserving leverage ahead of future discussions with China.

“President Trump seems reluctant to speak of this achievement, and understandably so, he has a high profile meeting with Xi coming up,” Ungar-Sargon said.

“And rather than brag about all the leverage he’s managed to accrue, the President seems to prefer to just use it.”
