Crowds of spring break visitors fled the sand in panic over the weekend in Daytona Beach after gunfire erupted near packed beach areas during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, as reported by The New York Post.

Authorities say at least four shootings were reported in the Daytona Beach area since Friday as large numbers of spring break visitors arrived in the city.

Local television station WFTV reported the incidents as police worked to respond to multiple disturbances across the beachside district.

A video posted online captured the chaotic scene as beachgoers ran across the sand after a gunshot rang out Saturday afternoon.

Footage filmed from a nearby hotel balcony showed hundreds of people scattering across the crowded beach while others rushed away from the shoreline.

It was not immediately clear what led to the gunfire in that incident or whether anyone was injured.

Officials said one of the earlier shootings took place on Friday near the beach strip after a fight broke out at The Joint Bar.

Police said a single shot was fired during the altercation. Authorities reported that no injuries were connected to that shooting.

About an hour later, another shooting was reported nearby outside a Crunch Fitness location. Details about the circumstances surrounding that shooting have not yet been fully released.

Two additional shootings were later reported in beachside areas on Saturday, according to police.

Investigators are continuing to examine whether the incidents were directly related to the large spring break crowds that descended on the city during the weekend.

The city’s beachfront and surrounding entertainment district typically see a surge of visitors during spring break each year, drawing college students and tourists from across the country.

Witnesses described the atmosphere in the area as chaotic, as crowds filled the streets and sidewalks near the beach.

Kissy Derito, who said she was visiting Daytona Beach with family members during the weekend, described the conditions as traffic and pedestrian congestion intensified.

“Twerking, dancing, stopping traffic, cussing people, flipping people off, stopping everyone, screaming. It was insane. Stopping traffic, you couldn’t move, you couldn’t go forward, back, nothing,” Derito said.

Authorities have not yet confirmed how many individuals may have been involved in the various incidents or whether any suspects have been taken into custody.

Local law enforcement agencies responded to multiple locations across the beach area throughout the weekend as officers worked to manage crowds and investigate the shootings.
