Lack of Gasoline Getting to Russians, Part Two

Lack of Gasoline Getting to Russians, Part Two
SHARE

This morning I wrote about another Russian oil refinery bursting into flames after a successful Ukrainian drone attack. That is going to mean another refinery slowing production and in all likelihood a greater strain on the country’s gasoline supply. The situation is so bad that Putin himself has been forced to acknowledge it, though the message most people in the country are hearing is that everything is fine.

It also means a near-daily supply of new videos of shocked and angry Russians losing their minds as they wait for hours in long gas lines. So let’s take a look at some of the most recent ones. First up, this video showing what gas lines look like in the suburbs of Moscow right now.

GOT GAS? My friend @Vijesti11111 posts this video of a gas station line in the suburb of Zhukovsky, outside Moscow. Gasoline & Internet– 21st century bread and circuses– are hard to get in Putin’s Russia. pic.twitter.com/RuRjoHm00X

The crisis really seems to have brought out the worst in a lot of Russian dirtbag men. This guy apparently slashed a woman’s tire and then pretended to be putting a cap on the valve stem. But if you watch closely, you’ll see the knife he’s holding in his other hand.

This poor guy ran out of gas on the freeway and the person who comes to help tells him he can’t help with gas.

This guy has been listening to Putin say there is no crisis as he waits for nearly an hour to get gas.

A Russian man reacts to Putin’s lie that there is “no crisis” in Russia and that fuel reserves are “almost the same as last year”:

“I’ve been waiting 45 minutes at the only gas station in town that still has gasoline after driving past eight others.

So yes, the fuel reserves… pic.twitter.com/1I4BDC2gpu

This woman says the situation gets worse every day but in true Russian style admits her complaints won’t matter.

A resident of Irkutsk, Russia complains about the worsening fuel shortage in the city.

“No one will help us. All our cries for help go unheard. The situation with fuel is getting worse every day.” https://t.co/HvllSi4ih0 pic.twitter.com/VPUHeOxvD2

Anton Gerashchenko has done quite a job pointing out that this problem is happening all over Russia. He’s collected a long string of videos from various cities showing that the crisis is very real.

There are another 8 or 10 of these videos but I’m going to stop because you get the idea.

All of this is obviously going to have a major impact on Russia’s economy. People who are stuck in line for hours starting at 5 am and still work a normal day, at least not for very long. Trucks that can’t get diesel can’t deliver food or other products. The situation is so dire that Russia is considering bringing back a type of fuel which was outlawed more than a decade ago.

Russia may allow the production and sale of gasoline and diesel fuel with environmental standards lowered as far as “Euro 2” for one year through July 2027, the Russian business daily Kommersant reported, citing a draft decree it had reviewed…

The sale of Euro 2 fuel has been prohibited in Russia since 2013.

The only problem with this plan? Euro 2 fuel can damage newer engines built for cleaner fuel.

It is not recommended for gasoline-powered vehicles bought after 2017 to use Euro-2 fuel. These vehicles are already equipped with sophisticated sensors, fine fuel lines, and sensitive fuel injectors that may easily be fouled up by Euro-2 fuel…

to avoid any issues, we only recommend using Euro-2 fuel if the car’s model year is 2005 or earlier. This is because these cars have very few emissions treatment systems that can be fouled up by Euro-2 fuel. Later models have begun to introduce systems like catalytic converters and other emissions treatment systems that aren’t designed to handle the high levels of pollutants in Euro 2 fuels.

In short, if your car is less than 10 years old, this is going to gunk up your engine sensors and likely result in costly repairs. Only if your car is more than 20 years old is this basically safe to use. I’m sure this will be good news for mechanics in Russia but probably not for a lot of Russians forced to rely on this fuel.
