Political commentator Susan Kokinda argued that President Donald Trump’s Thursday night address was designed to expose what she described as a cover-up within the U.S. intelligence community regarding election vulnerabilities, while also pointing to separate remarks by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as part of a broader discussion about election security and political violence.

Kokinda began by arguing that comments from Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan reflected what she believes is at stake in the debate over election legislation.

“Weeks before President Trump gave his Thursday night address, a Democratic senator let slip what was really at stake,” Kokinda said.

She then played remarks from Slotkin discussing the Save Act.

“The other thing that we blocked yesterday was the Save Act, right, which was literally, literally allow this administration to rig our democracy so that it would be hard for any Democrat in any state to win any election,” Slotkin said.

Kokinda argued that Slotkin’s comments underscored Democratic opposition to voter identification requirements.

“There you have Senator Elissa Slotkin, nominally from Michigan, but really channeling her CIA training, admitting that her party can’t win if the U.S. adopts the kind of voter identification laws that most of the other civilized nations in the world use,” Kokinda said.

According to Kokinda, Trump’s address was intended to build support for the Save America Act while also drawing attention to intelligence related to election security.

Trump said during his address that election integrity is fundamental to public confidence.

“No country can be great without fair and honest elections. You have to trust your country because if there can be no trust, there can be no greatness. Unfortunately, the system we have today falls catastrophically short of that standard. Tonight, I’m announcing the immediate declassification and release of critical intelligence, revealing shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure,” Trump said.

Kokinda maintained that the significance of the speech extended beyond the specific intelligence documents.

“Now, the fire hose of details is going to dominate the news about China, 220 million voter files, hack systems, non-citizens on the payroll, and other vulnerabilities,” she said. “People with more time than I have are going to parse every page of the now declassified documents, and that’s important. But don’t get drowned in the details. That wasn’t the president’s main purpose anyway.”

She continued, “The importance of what he did on Thursday was to drag the cover-up into the daylight. That’s what he wants you to see: that officials inside our own intelligence agencies work to keep the China findings away from the president and away from you.”

Kokinda also referenced allegations involving an FBI official.

“One FBI official even boasted that she was running a quote shadow government unquote to keep the intelligence buried. Let that sink in,” she said.

She then pointed to comments from Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin regarding the handling of intelligence under the previous administration.

“There’s no question the intelligence community from the FBI, CIA, and even other places within DHS, not underneath President Trump’s leadership, but that was underneath the Biden administration, kept it from President Trump and the American people in Congress,” Mullin said. “Everybody that purposely misled the American people abused their power and their authority, and decided not to continue doing their job will be held accountable.”

Kokinda argued that there were two methods used to minimize the president’s address: criticism of its contents and limited television coverage.

She later quoted Mullin again as he questioned why major broadcast networks did not carry Trump’s speech.

“So ABC and NBC not carrying that. Why? What are they trying to cover up? Why wouldn’t they want to inform the American people? Why are they calling themselves a news outlet if they’re not actually trying to put the news out there?” Mullin said.

“The president wasn’t trying to relitigate what happened in 2020, although he definitely could at this point. The president was getting facts: what we have exposed, what the Biden administration covered up, what the intelligence community held from with with the from the American people, Congress, and the executive branch, and we’re putting it out there, and yet two major networks didn’t want to cover it. I think the question really should say why.”

Kokinda also discussed a voter registration investigation in Muskegon, Michigan, involving GBI Strategies, describing it as an example of why Trump referenced the state during his address. She recounted allegations that local officials identified thousands of voter registration applications with similar handwriting before the matter was investigated and later transferred to the FBI.

The commentator then shifted to remarks delivered earlier that day by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during a State Department ministerial on political terrorism.

“And before I proceed, I’m going to go off script for a minute, which is always dangerous, but I’m going to remind everyone in this room and all the media that I was the subject of an assassination attempt, February 2024, by a addled left wing activist two hours after being sworn into my jobs. So, any of you who want to report that. This is a fiction and does not exist. Be there for the sentencing this August,” Bessent said.

Kokinda argued that Bessent’s comments represented what she called “the other half of the story,” linking political violence with election integrity concerns.

She then highlighted portions of Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s address discussing historical acts of left-wing political terrorism.

“You remember the machine gun massacres of Italy’s Red Brigades, which held the five-time prime minister captive for 55 days before subjecting him to a revolutionary so-called people’s trial, and executing him in 1978, you remember the Red Army faction’s nearly three-decade campaign of bombings, kidnappings, and assassinations in Germany, murdering dozens and injuring hundreds more,” Rubio said.

Kokinda identified the historical figures referenced by Rubio, including former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro, Deutsche Bank Chairman Alfred Herrhausen, and Detlev Rohwedder, arguing that each represented leaders pursuing national sovereignty before being assassinated.

Rubio concluded his remarks by describing what he characterized as the motivations behind political terrorism.

“It has always been driven by a hatred, above all else, a hatred for civilization itself. It is a revolt of the worst against the best, a revolt of the weak and the cowardly against the strong, and the good, it is perpetrated by those who cannot build, who cannot create, who cannot achieve great things,” Rubio said.

Kokinda concluded by arguing that the president’s address and the remarks delivered by Rubio and Bessent should be viewed together, contending that one focused on election-related intelligence while the other addressed the historical use of political violence, which she said represented two separate challenges confronting the United States.
