Sir Ian McKellen is making headlines after revealing an unusual acting technique he used while filming Marvel’s upcoming superhero movie, Avengers: Doomsday, as reported by Breitbart.

During a talk in Rome, the veteran British actor told the audience that he imagined destroying President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in order to make one of his film scenes feel more authentic.

McKellen, who reprises his iconic role as Magneto in the new movie, said the film’s directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, encouraged him to think of something personal while performing a destruction sequence.

According to McKellen, the filmmakers told him, “to look more furious: make it look as if you hate what you’re destroying.”

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

He responded by envisioning a real-world place he had strong feelings about. Rising from his chair onstage, McKellen re-enacted the moment and recalled shouting, “Mar-a-Lago!” while mimicking the scene.

The actor, who turns 87 this year, described the experience with theatrical energy as he performed the reenactment for his audience.

McKellen first played Magneto in the X-Men films, where his character famously manipulates metal and unleashes destructive forces using magnetic power.

In Avengers: Doomsday, which is slated for a December release, he returns to the role as part of the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The actor’s remarks, first reported by The Guardian, quickly drew attention online after a clip of his stage comments circulated on social media.

McKellen has long been known for his outspoken views, both in the entertainment industry and on broader social issues.

Last year, he produced a one-night-only staging of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night that featured an entirely transgender and non-binary cast.

He has also criticized Hollywood’s lack of gay characters and actors, calling for more inclusivity in 2018.

At the same time, McKellen rejected what he saw as excessive limits in casting rules, saying he did not agree with the idea that only gay performers should be allowed to play gay roles.

An openly gay actor and a longtime advocate for LGBTQ+ representation, McKellen has often used his public appearances to merge performance, activism, and humor.

His latest remarks continue that pattern, mixing political edge with theatrical flair, as he described bringing personal imagination into his portrayal of one of Marvel’s most destructive villains.

Avengers: Doomsday marks his latest collaboration with major Hollywood filmmakers, building anticipation as fans await how his Magneto will fit into the high-stakes world of superheroes and villains.

While some viewers may see his comments as a playful acting anecdote, others note that the mention of Mar-a-Lago adds a distinctly political layer to an otherwise fictional story.

Whatever the reaction, McKellen’s remarks once again demonstrate his willingness to blend bold personal expression with creative performance choices.

The actor’s candid comments keep him squarely in the spotlight — both for his enduring screen presence and for his unfiltered approach to the roles he plays.
