A Brazilian woman has been convicted after authorities said she spent more than a year living with a foster family while pretending to be a child. The bizarre deception unraveled when her real identity and age finally came to light, as reported by Fox News.

Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira is actually 37 years old, according to officials.

The Court of Justice of Santa Catarina convicted her Thursday of fraud and false identity following proceedings that exposed the extraordinary extent of the charade.

The foster family welcomed Oliveira into its home and treated her as a daughter for 14 months. She had reportedly claimed that she was a child fleeing abuse, a story that helped her gain the family’s trust and care.

Authorities said Oliveira later admitted that both her identity and age had been fabricated. What appeared to the family to be a vulnerable child was, in reality, a grown woman carrying out an astonishing deception.

The case may have lasted 14 months inside that particular home, but the broader act reportedly went on far longer.

The Washington Post reported that Oliveira had falsely lived as a child for 15 years as part of an “elaborate fraud.”

She reportedly used a high-pitched and childlike voice to make the performance more believable. Oliveira also told people that she had been forced to take hormones, which supposedly explained why she appeared older than the age she claimed.

The court sentenced Oliveira to one year, six months, and 10 days in prison. She also received four months and 18 days of detention for the offenses tied to her false identity and fraudulent conduct.

One of her attorneys, Lúcio Sousa, argued that the scheme was how Oliveira “survived.”

The defense presented her difficult history as an explanation for the deception, though the court still found that her conduct crossed the legal line.

Before the verdict, Sousa said, “She admits that she invented an identity.” That admission placed the central issue beyond much dispute, even as her legal team challenged whether the case met every required element of fraud.

“It was the way she found to survive. But she has been a vulnerable person for more than 20 years,” Sousa added while describing his client’s circumstances and defending her actions.

Sousa also said, “She has lived on the streets, and there has been no allegation that she obtained any financial advantage, or committed robbery or theft, which, in theory, means the elements of fraud have not been established.”

Oliveira acknowledged deceiving those around her, saying, “Of course, I deceived people, I lied.” She then insisted, “But I didn’t intend to scam anyone.”

Her explanation focused on an emotional desire to receive the affection and protection she said had been missing from her own childhood.

That claim offered a motive, but it did not erase the fact that a family had been misled for more than a year.

“There was a certain void in me, a need to have that kind of care, so I always sought it out,” Oliveira said.

Her statement suggested she repeatedly pursued childlike treatment as a response to that claimed emotional absence.

The case presents a rare and deeply unsettling example of false identity fraud. A family believed it was protecting a child from abuse, only to discover that the person living under its roof was an adult with a long-established pattern of deception.

After the conviction, Sousa said in an Instagram statement that the defense would “pursue all appropriate legal measures and appeals before the higher courts.”

Oliveira may continue fighting the ruling, but the Santa Catarina court has already delivered its judgment on the elaborate masquerade.
