A malfunction near a baby, hospital patient, factory employee, or police encounter would not be dismissed as quirky robot behavior.

Dr. Roman Yampolskiy, a tenured associate professor and computer scientist at the University of Louisville, warned that context determines whether a robotic failure becomes comedy or catastrophe.

“The event would be viewed not as comic relief but as a dangerous systems failure,” he told The Post.

Yampolskiy also drew a sharp distinction between an embarrassing entertainment failure and a malfunction involving machinery trusted with serious responsibilities.

“A glitch in a dancing robot is mostly embarrassing,” he said, while noting that failures involving security, medicine, transportation, or industry can injure people and damage property.

That is the inconvenient reality behind the relentless sales pitch for putting robots everywhere. Silicon Valley-style boosters may promise convenience and efficiency, but ordinary people are expected to absorb the risk when the shiny machine decides to punch, kick, crash, or otherwise rebel against its programming.

Whether the Saratov showdown was authentic, staged, or somewhere in between, the footage delivered a memorable warning.

If a small store robot can send employees scrambling after one little shove, the public might reasonably ask what happens when larger machines receive more power, more access, and fewer human restraints.
