Vice President JD Vance’s comment about “childless cat ladies” became a notable talking point during President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign. Taylor Swift later referenced the remark while endorsing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, as reported by Fox News.

Despite the attention surrounding the exchange, JD Vance’s mother, Beverly Vance, did not realize Swift’s political statement was connected to something her son had said years earlier.

She learned about the connection during a recent appearance on OutKick’s “Tomi Lahren is Fearless.”

Host Tomi Lahren asked Beverly whether it felt strange to see Swift make a political statement tied to her son’s earlier interview. Beverly’s response made clear that the intended reference had passed her by entirely.

“I had no idea that’s what she was even doing,” Beverly said she had not connected Swift’s post with her son’s remark until Lahren raised the subject.

When Lahren expressed surprise, Beverly continued explaining her reaction. “Yeah. I didn’t even know until you just said that. Yeah, I didn’t even put the two together. So that’s funny.”

Beverly also laughed while discussing the moment on the program. “I had no idea that’s what she was even doing. Until you just said that, I didn’t even put the two together,” Vance said.

The comment at the center of the discussion came from JD Vance’s 2021 interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News. At the time, Vance was a Senate candidate speaking critically about Democrats.

During that interview, Vance described Democrats as “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.”

The remark resurfaced during the 2024 presidential campaign, becoming a repeated subject of political conversation. Swift brought additional attention to it when she endorsed Harris and Walz and posed for a photograph with a cat.

Beverly defended her son’s intentions, saying the comment reflected his sense of humor rather than a serious attack. From her perspective, the controversy resulted partly from people not receiving the statement in the playful way he intended.

“I just thought it was funny,” Beverly said. “JD’s just got a sense of humor, and you know he was making a joke, and obviously people didn’t take it as a joke, but you know, I know JD, and he just meant it as a joke.”

Although Beverly characterized the remark as humor, the vice president has acknowledged that making it was a mistake.

The conversation then shifted toward Swift’s husband, Kansas City Chiefs superstar Travis Kelce. Lahren noted that Kelce grew up in Ohio, giving him something geographically in common with the Vance family.

Beverly immediately added another Ohio connection involving Kelce’s football career. She pointed out that he played college football at the University of Cincinnati.

Swift and Kelce were pictured together at Game 3 between the New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals. The game took place at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 23, 2026.

They were also seen together in New York City on May 16, 2026. Those appearances accompanied the renewed discussion of Swift’s political endorsement and Beverly’s amused realization about the cat themed reference.

Beverly’s response ultimately added a light twist to a remark that had generated significant campaign conversation. Rather than recounting an immediate reaction to Swift’s post, she revealed that she had not understood the connection until Lahren explained it directly.
