Susan Sarandon claimed her political beliefs are still costing her work, saying movies have recently been taken away because some agencies continue warning people not to hire her, as reported by Page Six.

The 79-year-old actress discussed her standing in the film industry during a press conference at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday. The appearance came three years after she was dropped by her talent agency following remarks about frightened Jewish people.

Sarandon was asked whether she believes the “tides are changing” in the film business. “I think that the narrative has completely changed,” she replied.

“There’s a lot of things that people are aware of now,” the “Thelma & Louise” star added while addressing how the situation has developed.

However, Sarandon said the shift in public awareness has not removed professional obstacles within Hollywood. She claimed agencies are still discouraging others in the industry from employing her.

“In terms of the power structure, I’ve still had movies taken away recently, because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still,” Sarandon said. “But that’s the power structure.”

The Oscar winner attended the festival for the premiere of her new Italian film, “The Echo Chamber,” on Sunday. Although she has become an outsider in Hollywood, Sarandon said she feels “welcome” among people internationally.

“So it depends,” she said. “If it’s a major studio, I think there is, not just with me, but with other people, that have been told that that is impossible.”

Sarandon also thanked Andrea Pallaoro, the director of “The Echo Chamber,” for moving ahead with the project. She credited him “because he didn’t listen to the warnings.”

The “Rocky Horror Picture Show” actress said she believes understanding of the broader situation has changed among the general public. At the same time, she maintained that strongly held positions within her industry remain an obstacle.

“So I think, yes, there has been a change in terms of understanding of the situation, and I think the general public, but there are still very strongly held positions within my industry held by Zionists and [those] who have not relaxed their feelings towards me,” she explained.

Despite those professional consequences, Sarandon presented herself as comfortable with the community she has found. She concluded, “But I found my family, I found my people, and I’m OK.”

Sarandon’s career suffered after she spoke against Israel following the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas. Her comments at a pro-Palestinian rally in New York City drew intense criticism.

During that rally, Sarandon said frightened Jews were “getting a taste of what it is like to be Muslim in this country, so often subjected to violence.”

Two weeks later, the actress issued an official apology through social media. She said her “phrasing was a terrible mistake.”

“It implies that until recently Jews have been strangers to persecution, when the opposite is true,” Sarandon wrote while acknowledging the impact of her words.

“I deeply regret diminishing this reality and hurting people with this comment,” she continued. “It was my intent to show solidarity in the struggle against bigotry of all kinds, and I am sorry I failed to do so.”

Despite that apology, top Hollywood agency UTA dropped Sarandon. A production company also decided it no longer wanted to work with the “Feud” actress because of her controversial remarks.

“We were considering her for a short film, but due to her recent statements, we have decided to pursue other options,” David Barroso, the cofounder of the independent film production company, told Page Six at the time.

Sarandon has now returned to the festival spotlight with “The Echo Chamber.” The Italian film will be released in Italy on Thursday.
