The harrowing images offered a clear look at the narrow escape. Both pilots survived the crash and were reported to be in strong condition afterward, according to the RAF.

“Both pilots are doing well, they are in extremely good spirits and expected to make a full recovery,” the RAF said in a statement. The service did not provide additional details about any injuries suffered during the incident.

The RAF also announced that investigators would examine what led to the crash. The cause was not immediately clear, leaving the circumstances surrounding the aircraft’s final moments unresolved.

“A formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is now underway and as a precautionary measure, the RAF has temporarily paused Hawk T1 and Hawk T2 flying operations,” the RAF said.

The RAF described the aircraft on its website as “a high-performance, 2-seat training jet equipped with advanced avionics and synthetic radar to simulate front-line combat aircraft like the Typhoon.”

The service further explained the jet’s central training role. “Used primarily by the RAF for advanced jet training, it prepares pilots for complex tactical environments,” the RAF said.

RAF Valley on Anglesey serves as a major training location for future fighter pilots. The base is home to No 4 Flying Training School, according to information published by the RAF.

“RAF Valley on Anglesey is home to No 4 Flying Training School, responsible for training the UK’s next generation of world-class fighter pilots,” the RAF said. That mission places the base at the center of the service’s effort to prepare new aircrew.

Training conducted at RAF Valley is not limited to fighter pilot preparation. The RAF said crews there also receive instruction for operations involving mountainous terrain and maritime environments.

“Aircrew are also trained at RAF Valley for mountain and maritime operations throughout the world,” the RAF said.

The crash therefore occurred near a base with a broad mission focused on preparing personnel for challenging conditions.
