WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The Justice Department subpoenaed Sen. Ruben Gallego’s leadership PAC during an ongoing federal criminal investigation into his use of campaign money.
  • The subpoena sought records and Gallego’s statements from a Senate Ethics Committee inquiry that was dismissed in June.
  • Reporting identified family trips and more than $18,000 in childcare reimbursements since 2019, including $400 paid to Gallego’s wife’s mother.
  • A joint committee created with former Rep. Eric Swalwell spent more than $37,000 on Super Bowl LVII tickets and meals.

The Justice Department subpoenaed Sen. Ruben Gallego’s leadership PAC as part of a federal criminal investigation into the Arizona Democrat’s use of campaign money. The investigation centers on spending that reportedly helped finance family travel, childcare reimbursements, entertainment, and meals.

According to a copy obtained by POLITICO, the grand jury subpoena was issued to Gallego’s Juntos PAC on Aug. 21. The existence of the subpoena had not previously been reported.

The subpoena sought records connected to “activities on or about” Sept. 9, 2025. It also demanded statements that Gallego gave the Senate Ethics Committee during the panel’s separate investigation into the possible misuse of funds.

That Senate committee dismissed its inquiry in June. The federal subpoena, however, states that it concerns an “ongoing criminal investigation” and says the collected records will be presented to a grand jury.

The deadline listed on the subpoena was Sept. 4. Gallego spokesman Jacques Petit said the senator’s leadership PAC provided everything requested by federal investigators.

“The leadership PAC has complied with and responded to the Trump DOJ subpoena because it has nothing to hide,” Petit told POLITICO. His statement framed the PAC as cooperative while directly tying the demand to the Trump Justice Department.

Petit did not say whether Gallego himself had received a subpoena. He also did not disclose whether federal investigators had subpoenaed members of the senator’s family or anyone working on his staff.

The criminal investigation grew out of reporting about Gallego’s use of money provided by political donors. POLITICO documented a series of family trips involving Disneyland, Disney World, Miami, and Chicago.

The reporting also found more than $18,000 in childcare reimbursements dating back to 2019. That total included a $400 payment to Gallego’s wife’s mother, adding another family connection to the spending under examination.

One source described the account in particularly blunt terms, calling it Gallego’s “personal slush fund.” The phrase captured the criticism surrounding expenditures that allegedly supported a luxurious lifestyle rather than a conventional political operation.

The spending record also involves former California Rep. Eric Swalwell. Gallego and Swalwell created a joint committee in October 2022 called the “Swallego Victory Fund.”

The following year, the committee was used to purchase tickets to Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona. CBS News reported that the fund spent more than $37,000 on tickets and meals before it was terminated.

After the committee shut down, approximately $7,600 went to each man’s campaign. The arrangement connected Gallego’s financial operation with Swalwell through both the joint committee and its expensive Super Bowl outing.

Swalwell left Congress in April and abandoned a campaign for governor after multiple women came forward with misconduct accusations. The California Democrat has denied those allegations.

The federal subpoena follows earlier reporting about the two investigations. Breitbart News reported in June that federal prosecutors moved in one day after the Senate Ethics Committee completed its inquiry.

Gallego’s office dismissed that timing as “politically motivated.” Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Florida Republican, filed the complaint that triggered the Senate ethics investigation, which ended before the federal criminal inquiry became public.
